PLEASANCE, Philip Ross RAF 900089, RNZAF 74292 FLT SGT In his 93rd year Passed away peacefully at Hamilton on Friday 20 January 2012. Dearly loved husband of the late Patricia etc. A service will be held at the Soldiers Memorial Church 116 Park Road Titirangi Auckland on Thursday 26 January 2012 at 11am. No add for messages. Also THOMPSON, Brian Connatt. On Tuesday Jan 10 2012 . in Tauranga Dearly loved husband of the late Margaret etc. No children. aged 95 years. No service number avail. Brian was a W/O pilot flying Hurricanes and Typhoons during ww2. He married his “English Rose” Margaret and she said, in an interview that the Classic Flyers Museum here in Tauranga recorded on a DVD, that “he flew away each day, I had no idea what he was doing, and he came home at night. I had no idea that he was in danger”. Amazing.. He described the dangers he faced; I visited him several times and it was extremely interesting to hear of his adventures and we are so grateful that we have a lot of this on DVD. He tells of a ‘devil’ sitting on his shoulders for quite a while and he told the ‘devil’ where to go, and the ‘devil’ finally went away. He survived and recovered from a spin in a Typhoon that was often fatal to the pilots. He was the only survivor of 11 pilots who trained together. He was an incredible man who asked for women to carry his coffin. Female relations carried him out to the hearse, all dressed as Angels complete with wings. Brian used to write children’s stories all featuring angels. A real character

I was randomly googling my family name and came across your website.
Peter DeRenzy is my Great Uncle. He lived in Matamata and was a Dairy Farmer. His Brother also served in the War (as a Pilot) and is still alive.
Any questions please ask.

It is with great sadness, that I advise you of the passing of ....
GORDON NOEL SIMES, NZ415376, NAVIGATOR, 75(NZ)SQN RAF, WARRANT OFFICCER, POW, in his 95th year.
Gordon was born in Hastings, moved to Shannon and then to Nelson to make cow milking grease/cream and veternary supplies. He joined the RNZAF in 1941, and trained as a Navigator. Posted to 75(NZ) Sqn RAF, and flew in Short Stirling bombers out of Mepal, Cambridge, England from May 1943. Skippered by F/O E.S. Wilkinson, they were shot down on the night of 5/6 Sep 1943 over Schwanheim, Germany in aircraft Stirling III, EE893, JN-N. Gordon and two fellow crewmembers survived and were made POW. His POW number was # 43282, Camp Stalag Kopernikus. They were eventually liberated, and Gordon married Dafney in England in 1946 and returned to Nelson, NZ to take over the veternary supplies business, renaming it G.N. Simes Ltd. He built a bach, boats and fished using drag nets near Marahau. They had three children and visited England and attended many 75 Squadron Association Reunions during the 70+80's. In later years Gordon's daughters have been caring for them. Dafney passed away last year, and not long after Uwe Benkel in Germany contacted me for infomation on any survivng crew from EE893. I advised them of Gordon's address, and he was very surprised to be told that they had excavated and found his old aircraft including his navigators case complete with papers. We honour and thank you Gordon for your service, sacrifice and dedication to King and country.
Through struggle to the stars, clear skies on your last flight to freedom - Ake Ake Kia Kaha.

There is a brief entry for Cornwell on pp216-217 of Vol Three of New Zealanders with the RAF: New Zealanders had their share of incident. For example, after bombing the marshalling yards at Campina, ten miles north-west of the Ploesti oilfields, engine failure forced Flight Sergeant Cornwell to ‘ditch’ his Wellington in the Adriatic; all but one member of the crew were saved and Cornwell, although injured, was soon back with his unit.
