Merv North, patron of Auckland Aero Club, sadly passed away peacefully on Sunday in the presence of his family and friends. Merv was a much loved fixture of the aero club who had recently been honoured with the registration of the new 162 ZK-AMN. Merv's father Fred North was one of AAC's founding members who also built the "Tui" light biplane. I believe Merv served in the RNZAF either during or immediately after WWII, and he was the first person to do a first solo with the Auckland Aero Club after the end of WWII, in 1946.
A service for Merv will be held at 11AM tomorrow in the Planespace hangar next to the aero club at Ardmore, this will be followed by a fly past of aero club aircraft and some of the Warbirds' aircraft (weather permitting).

Mervyn Harry Frederick North was Merv's full name. He was the son of Fred North. It was a very good service, a poignant fly by and the weather even held together for it to happen. RIP Merv.

Errol, yes the M H F North would be him, according to the service today he enlisted just before the end of the war so that would be correct. There was a very good turnout and the flypast went ahead as planned with six aero club aircraft, four Harvards and four Tiger Moths - a very fitting send-off for a man who lived and breathed aviation his whole life.

Odd, we had a very popular officer at No. 1TTS named Flight Lieutenant Rod Dalton, and it was widely known he was brother to Grant and Graham Dalton. All three had represented NZ in sport, Grant in yachting, Graham in rugby I believe, and Rod at basketball. Yet Rod is not mentioned here. Was Rod perhaps a cousin and not a brother? Or was RNZAF Rumour Control wrong again?
