That is really very sad to hear that Skip Watson has passed away. I had the priviledge of meeting him last year and found him to be a very interesting and nice gentleman, who had numerous excellent stories of combat in P-40's and Corsairs. My condolences to Shorty, I recall there was a family connection there.

"BROWN, Malcolm Arthur Alexander, On 29th May 2012 at Aparangi Village Aged 80 years. Husband of the late June. etc. A service for Malcolm will be held at the Hamilton Park Crematorium Chapel, Morrinsville Road Newstead on Friday 1 June at 11am. All communications to the Brown Family c/- Pellows Funeral Directors 138 Grey Street Hamilton. Ex F/S Peter Giles emailed and said that Malcolm was a radar fitter. I rang the Funeral Directors and they confirm he is ex Air Force but no further details known."

I spoke to Malcolm recently when he was living at Sunningdale in Hamilton. There is a photo with him in it in the "Kiwi Orions" book during the USA training for the Orions.

Yates appears in Colin Hanson's By Such Deeds - Honours and Awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923-1999: YATES, Corporal Leslie Vincent, MM.NZ403361; Born Llanelly, Wales, 23 May 1919; RNZAF 6 Sep 1940 to 15 Sep 1945; Fitter IIA. Citation Military Medal (29 Sep 1944): Gallantry and extreme devotion to duty were displayed by this non-commissioned officer in the face of intensive enemy action over a period of two weeks at Bougainville, Solomon Islands. Although for a greater part of the time the landing strip had been evacuated of aircraft as it was in line of constant shelling from artillery attacking the Allied positions, Corporal Yates continued with his task of repairing a damaged bomber aircraft beside the strip, and even when, at one stage, all other personnel had been withdrawn for four days, he and his party carried on in an exposed position regardless of the fall of enemy shells, some of which landed sufficiently close to cause further damage to the aircraft under repair. Under his leadership repairs were eventually completed, and the aircraft later flown to base. The aircraft was Ventura NZ4516, with repairs being undertaken Mar 1944. NZ413507 Brian Edward Talboys enlisted in the RNZAF on 14 Jun 41. He embarked for Canada on 22 Sep 41 but, if I recall correctly, he was there for a very long time, having fallen ill and never graduated as aircrew. He was not commissioned. Errol
