Sad to see that Charles Croall of No. 75 (NZ) Squadron, a POW and escaper, has passed away.
CROALL, Charles (Charles) MBE. (Service No, NZ41627, WOI, 75 Sqn, POW, RNZAF, WWII). Peacefully (surrounded by his loving family) at The Booms Lodge, Thames, on 18th October, 2013; aged 98 years. Much loved husband for the past 68 years of Ellen, dearly loved Dad of John and Lyn. Cherished granddad of Jacob (Denver, Colorado), Blair, and Amanda, and great-great- granddad of Ryan, Adele, Matilda and Greta. Thanks to all Thames Hospital Staff, Dr Aish and the amazing team at the Booms Lodge. A Celebration of Charlie's life will be held at St James Union Parish Church, Pollen Street, Thames, on Wednesday 23rd October at 11am, followed by private cremation. From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds - Honours and Awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923-1999: CROALL, Warrant Officer Charles, MBE.NZ41627; Born Hawera, 23 Jan 1916; RNZAF 19 Jan 1941 to 14 Jan 1947; PoW 29 Jul 1942 to May 1945; Pilot. Citation Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (7 Jan 1947): [75(NZ)Sqn RAF (Wellington)] Warrant Officer Croall was captured at Tonning in Germany on 29th July, 1942, and was imprisoned at various camps in Poland and Germany. On 12th December, 1942, twelve prisoners, including Warrant officer Croall, escaped and attempted to steal an aircraft but were caught and returned to camp. In February, 1943, in company with an Australian, Warrant Officer Croall escaped from a working party at Lasisk. After travelling through Poland they were arrested at the Polish-German border seven days later. Another attempt was made in May, 1943, from a working camp. Warrant Officer Croall and a companion headed towards Czechoslovakia but on the fifth night, when boarding a coal train bound for Italy, they were seen and recaptured. This Warrant Officer made three more escapes, his freedom on one occasion, lasting ten days. Finally, in February 1945, he and a friend jumped from a train at Kolin, near Prague. They were recaptured seven days later and sent to a concentration camp. Warrant Officer Croall was liberated in May, 1945, by the Americans. He was a very persistent escaper in spite of ill-health and earned high commendation for his attempts.On the night of 28/29 Jul 1942, six of 17 Wellingtons of 75(NZ)Sqn were lost during a raid on Hamburg with 21 members of the RNZAF and four RAF being killed while six RNZAF members, including W/O Croall, became prisoners of war. Member of the ‘Goldfish Club’. W/O Croall’s aircraft crashed at sea. By use of the aircraft dinghy the crew were able to reach the German coast by day-break, where they were captured shortly after. POTAKA, Ronald William(Bill), peacefully at Wanganui Hospital on 18th October 2013. Aged 80yrs. Bill Potaka was Admin. in the Air Force, retired, and then joined the Army. His funeral is at 1130 on Wednesday 23rd., in Wanganui.

Ronald William (Bill) POTAKA H621628 Senior Admin Clerk RNZAF until 1966 and then NZ Army 11 Jan 1966 to 18 Jan 1978 peacefully at Wanganui Hospital on 18th October 2013 aged 80yrs. Bill Potaka was an Admin in the Airforce, retired, and then joined the Army. His funeral is at 1130 on Wednesday 23 October in Wanganui.
SGTENG (RTD) Donald Charles (Don) BRADLEY W81440 RNZAF 7 Jan 1964 to 17 Aug 1978.
I have just had a call from Don Bradley's daughter who advised the sad passing of Don after a long battle with cancer in the last 24hrs.
Don joined the RNZAF in the mid 60's rose to Sgt as a Flight Engineer on C130's leaving the RNZAF in the late 70's. He later flew as a Flt Engineer for both Laker and Cathay Pacific and was extremely active in Motor Racing specialising in both the running and the preparing of Alfa cars where he was outstanding. He will be missed.
Funeral service details for Auckland to be advised.

I never realised that Eric Brady had flown Lancasters. I'm sure I read when he hit the headlines a few years back that he'd been in the Army in Italy so someone had some duff gen it seems. If he was 87 now he must have been in Lancs at the tail end of the war and pretty young too. About 16 when he joined the RNZAF??
