This is just a curious question but My Father and I used to sail against and have lots of fun with a great gentleman by the name of Doug Skellon. I was only a young fella then but he used to be an instructor during and after the war on Harvards. I was just wondering if he is still with us as we have lost contact.

Hardly the right thread to ask, but yes Doug is still alive as far as I know, and he lives at Glenfield, Auckland. I talked on the phone with him about a year ago, and he's still listed as there. The white pages are your friend.

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of S/L Doug Brown yesterday. Doug of course flew Spitfires with 485 (NZ) Sqn and was a champion of the associations post war reunions and a colourful and larger then life character. Many will be familiar with Doug through this forum and the many references and posts related to him including his book "Wine, Woman and Song'. No funeral details to report yet and notices will appear in due course.

A service will be held at King's School Chapel of the Holy Child, 258 Remuera Rd, at 1pm Friday 4th October. From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds - Honours and Awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923-1999: BROWN, Squadron Leader Douglas Gordon Elliot, mid. NZ405225 & 131589; Born Auckland, 6 Feb 1919; RNZAF 22 Dec 1940 to 26 Jun 1945, Res. to 6 Feb 1974; Pilot. Citation Mention in Despatches (14 Jun 1945): For distinguished service. Served with 130 (Punjab) Sqn RAF (Spitfire) in Holland during the period May-Dec 1944, becoming CO in Nov-Dec 1944. Sqn Ldr Brown also served with 485 Sqn RNZAF (Spitfire) from Nov 1941 to Sep 1943, becoming flight commander. He flew a total of 250 sorties. Also served as an instructor at the Fighter Leaders School and Pre-Invasion School, Sep 1943-May 1944. During 1943 Flt Lt Brown, in a Spitfire, was providing ‘cover’ to a man in the water from a ditched Stirling. He decided to drop his own dinghy to the man and after considerable contortions managed to free the dinghy from his own parachute pack. For the drop he reduced height to 30 feet, his speed back to 100 mph, with full flap down and then threw the dinghy overboard - it wrapped itself around his tailplane but fortunately it was torn free by the slipstream. A Walrus aircraft duly arrived and all the crew in the water were saved. However, for some time, Flt Lt Brown continued to receive demands from RAF Accounts for the payment for one dinghy! Errol

Bill Sturrock was one of life's characters. I knew him when I managed Superstrike Ten Pin Bowling Centre in Hamilton. He was a great coach and encouraged a lot of mediocre bowlers to step up.

It is with much sadness that I report the passing of Allan Wallace today in Queensland Australia. Al was Avionics and my Flight Sergeant when I got posted to 3 Sqn in 1985 as a young and inexperienced Mechanic. He was a very wise and Fatherly figure for us. Al also went to the US in 1969/70 when we bought the Skyhawks and was part of the RNZAF maintenance team at NAS Cecil Field.

Alan Wallace was a true gentleman with a great sense of humour. I worked with Alan on 75 and 14 Squadrons and always enjoyed his company whether at work or in the mess. He will be sorely missed. RIP Alan.

I have also been informed that Charles Cooke QSM has sadly passed away following an illness. He was well known in the RNZAF Association among other aviation circles.
