I just read in the latest issue of Air Force News that Alan Bennison passed away on the 30th of April 2011. He was the last known New Zealand Air Gunner to serve in the Battle of Britain. That leaves just three NZ Battle of Britain pilots known to be still alive now.

It is interesting that Joe's death notice lists him as Joe as his real name was John. His family (parents and siblings) knew him as Jack, but he got the nickname of Hurricane Joe in Canada and the name Joe stuck for the rest of his life. Joe was a Wireless Operator-Air Gunner on No. 1 (GR) Squadron Hudsons, and then flew in Fiji with No. 4 Squadron. He flew for a very short time in Venturas too. He was also a member of the Christchurch Brevet Club.

John Firby Kendrick 86 of Huntly and Snells Beach died 2nd August
A good friend of my family.
I not 100% sure but somebody might know him. He was late getting to Europe being held up in transit in Singapore but flew a few bombing missions as a navigator for some famous bombing pilot (name escapes me). Then returned to fly in the Pacific but got held up in transit (again) in India and arrived in the pacific at the same time they dropped the bomb.
He then trained in the air force in Hurricanes and solo'd for the first time in a Mustang but the war had finished.
He left the air force and got a degree in engineering, working many years for the mines then the MOW.

Philip, John Kendrick has the following entry in Gp Capt Colin Hanson's By Such Deeds - Honours and Awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923-1999: KENDRICK, Flying Officer John Firby, AE. NZ433306 & 130124; Born Suva, Fiji, 13 Aug 1924; RNZAF 19 Mar 1943 to 20 Jan 1946, TAF 1 Sep 1950, Res. 1 Apr 1954 to 14 Aug 1979; Pilot. Air Efficiency Award - 1 Mar 1957. My own records confirm his departure from New Zealand on the Umata from Bluff on 16 May 1944. The ship disembarked at Belfast on 9 July and at Liverpool on 15 July, but at which the 23 RNZAF pilots on board got off I do not know. Nor do I know which route the ship took but it certainly would not have been via Singapore which was at that time occupied by the Japanese. I suspect that 'Hurricanes' should read Harvards, as none of the former were operated by the RNZAF in New Zealand. Errol

Thanks Errol
It's good to know his record exists. He was a great guy with a lot of good stories to tell not just in the war years. I wish he could have been at the get-together in Cambridge.
