Sad to see my friend Julia White has passed away. She was a WAAF in WWII. She was originally from the West Coast and was engaged to a chap who worked for Bert Mercer's airline. He joined the RNZAF when the war broke out and went to the UK, where he was killed in a bomber. She decided rather than to wallow in her grief she would do her bit, so she joined the WAAF. She then met Raymond 'Jack' White who was also in the RNZAF, and the two settled in Cambridge postwar.

Buckley John William pff NZ413812 F/Lt RNZAF S/L RAF On August 11 2011 in Rotorua. John volunteered in 1940 and was accepted for aircrew training in 1941. He solo’ed at EFTS after 7 hours 50 minutes training marking him as a good flyer. Too good for ops, from January 1942 until 1944 he was an instructor at Little Rissington AFU. Along with long time friend Bill Simpson also on instruction duties he pressed the RNZAF liason officer for action. The result they both went to Pathfinders, Bill to 109, John to 627. Johns most memorable op was as tail end Charlie, carrying a movie cameraman to Norway on for a low level raid on the Gestapo headquarters in Oslo. A very laid back gent John had plenty of adventures (see Kiwis Do Fly) but my favourite was post war as a flight commander on 682 Sq. Carrying out an aerial survey of East Africa, based in Eastleigh but with girlfriend in Nairobi he used his Lanc to commute for the weekend parties, until caught. LANCASTER: Not for the social use of! Having flown TW916 (683 Squadron PR Lancaster) up to Eastleigh to attend a Saturday night function. John is told by the CO (in civvies) Group Captain Ian Lawson that he should return whence he came! 27 July 1952. This independent spirit surfaced again. “Eventually I did less and less flying and more ‘admin.’ One afternoon when I was left in charge of the office, an Air Ministry signal came through requesting a bod to be recommended for what was a very nice appointment. Not being too impressed with my current ‘job’ I duly completed the signal and back it went. My Commanding Officer was stunned two weeks later when my self-appointed posting came through”. (Kiwis Do Fly) After retiring from his RAF service in 1960 he eventually returned to NZ in 1980. John was a great guy and a good friend to all, except fools! He has no surviving family in New Zealand. RIP John

Allan
John and Laurie's Dad was John senior; he passed away a couple of years ago. I'll bet they are related to Vic though.
I see Vic Bargh mentioned a few posts ago - did he have aviation connections?

Vic Bargh was an RNZAF Buffalo pilot in Burma, and quite a good one by all accounts. There's a biography of his wartime experiences by Neil Francis called Ketchil.

Sad to see that, as far as I know, the last of the pilots from the original line-up of No. 3 (GR) Squadron RNZAF when it formed in 1941 has died. Back then he was known as Alf Arnott, postwar he began using his middle name Noel. I visited Noel in October 2010 and gathered some of his memories of those days in the RNZAF flying Baffins, Vincents, Hudsons and Venturas. He was a fairly good aviation artist too, I saw many interesting paintings in his St Heliers home. Noel also brought the first Ventura to New Zealand from Hawaii. RIP.
ARNOTT, Alfred Noel. (Service No: 403418 RNZAF). Peacefully on Friday 26 August, 2011; In his 97th year. Cherished husband of the late Billie. Much loved father of Judith and Gaenor, and father- in-law of Andrew Bavaird. Treasured poppa of Adrienne, Marguerite, Justine, Anneliese, and Jason and great-grandfather of 10. "Always remembered". A Private Service has been held.
I am told that Bernie Piesse flew Corsairs from Trincomalee, Ceylon, and then from a carrier in the British Pacific Fleet in WWII.
PIESSE, Bernard Godfrey. KEV, NZ2240 WWII RNZAF, RNZNVR. Peacefully at Kaitaia Hospital on August 30, 2011. Beloved husband of the late Grace Irene. Much loved father of Julian, and Sarah-Jane and Ali. Adored grandfather of Arya and Blair, and Mina, and great grandfather of Darius. "An officer and a gentleman." A funeral service will be held at St Andrews Anglican Church, Mangonui on Saturday September 3, 2011 at 2pm followed by private cremation. All communications to 021-827-291, Sarah-Jane Saravani. Squire Funeral Services Kaikohe/Kawakawa
McCOLL, Andrew Addis. RNZAF 414044 LAC WWII. Loved husband of the late Molly. Much loved father of Peter, Vera, Raewyn and Bill. Pop of Craig, Kyomi, Kelly and Ken. Big Pop of Jodie, Hana, Corbin, Matthew and Scott. Much loved brother of Charlie. A long journey comes to an end for a hardworking, stubborn but fair and well respected man. He did it his way. RIP Dad. Special thanks to the Beattie Home Staff, but extra special thanks to Dawn, Sheryl and Val for going beyond the call of duty in ensuring that Dad spent his last days in absolute comfort and in the care of familiar faces and surroundings. A service for Any will be held at St Brides Anglican Church, Otorohanga on Friday 2 September at 11.00am followed by a private cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Prostate Cancer, can be left at the Church. All communications to VJ Williams & Sons, PO Box 241, Te Kuiti 3941.
