Ray Deerness sent this message to me which has filtered through to him from Denis Thompson:
I thought I would let you know long time friend and ferry pilot extraordinaire Jim Hazelton passed away peacefully at home last night at 0800 Zulu headed to fly in another galaxy. The holder of a CPL for over 60 years engaged in Ag work (8000 hours topdressing in a Cessna 180) flight instruction and ferry flying for almost 50 years. Never scratched an aircraft or got one wet in 35,000 hours. I was with him on his 25th Pacific crossing in 1972. The passing of a legend. Cheers Dennis Dennis Thompson, JP DIRECTOR

From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds - Honours and Awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923-1999: SPEIRS, Flying Officer Alan Robert, DFC, (pff). NZ413136; Born Nelson, 13 Apr 1923; RNZAF 25 May 1941 to 11 Mar 1946; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (17 Oct 1944 to date from 30 Apr 1944): [7(PFF)Sqn RAF (Lancaster)] Throughout many operational sorties Flying Officer Speirs has shown outstanding courage and devotion to duty. In March, 1944, he was detailed for an attack on Stuttgart. While en-route to the target his aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter and considerable damage was sustained. Despite this, Flying Officer Speirs successfully completed his mission. The following month, when detailed for a sortie to Karlsruhe, while some distance from his objective, his aircraft was engaged by an enemy fighter and one of the engines set on fire. Displaying fine airmanship, Flying Officer Speirs flew the damaged bomber safely back to base.
Member of the ‘Caterpillar Club’. On the night of 1/2 May 1944 Fg Off Speirs was detailed to bomb the railway marshalling yards at Chambly, north of Paris. Just as he was turning away from the target his aircraft received a direct hit. The control column flew out of his hand and both starboard engines and the starboard wing caught fire. The Lancaster went into a steep dive out of control and the crew were ordered to bale out. Fg Off Speirs was thrown against the side of the fuselage and knocked unconscious. When he came to he found that he had fallen through the perspex roof and was hanging by his seat harness upside down. He released himself and parachuted into a forest. He hid his parachute, stripped off his flying clothing and removed all identification from his battle dress jacket. At dawn he set out to make his way to Paris when he met two civilians who directed him to a nearby house where contact was made with the French Underground. In Paris he was billeted in private houses until the end of May when he was moved to the forests near Châteaudun where, as a part of Operation SHERWOOD, he remained under the care of MI.9 and French underground forces until 13 Aug 1944. He returned to England 14 weeks after being shot down. Over 150 Allied airmen lived in the forests and all were safely returned to England. Thirty-eight of them were subsequently to lose their lives on returning to operations. All of Fg Off Speirs’ crew were trapped in their burning aircraft and lost their lives. They included navigator Fg Off J H Wain DFC, RNZAF (qv) and rear gunner F/S J E Cliff, RNZAF. Fg Off Speirs had earlier flown 15 sorties with 75(NZ)Sqn RAF, then a further 15 sorties with 7 Sqn. On return from France he converted onto the Mosquito and flew 20 sorties with 128 Sqn RAF of the LNSF. Errol

John Morton was a very interesting character. I conducted a series of oral interviews with him late last year on behalf of a helicopter museum in the UK. He joined the FAA in 1942 and served on an aircraft carrier right at the end of hostilities in the Pacific. Stayed in the navy post war and became their first helicopter expert. Was seconded to fairey aviation and test flew many of the 1950/60s helicopters including the fairey rotodyne. Have a photo of him test flying our first wasp NZ3901 for westland in 1966. He retired in 1972 and came to new Zealand.
