I'm really sad to see on 3 News that Allan George DFC DFM has passed away. He was an amazing man. Allan came up to Ardmore for the Mosquito Launch airshow and he was the veteran that Warren and I chose to speak at the Honour Dinner. I have kept in touch with him since but could never convince him to do an interview. However he told me Amanda Gillies of 3 News has done an extensive filmed interview with him over several sessions so his story is recorded, and she put together a superb obituary for him on tonight's news. Allan was 96.

An unfortnately inaccurate and over the top account, I'm afraid, expecially the silly Pathfinder 20 percent survival rate comment. The Mosquito suffered the lowest loss rate of all the main types operated by Bomber Command; not least because they could fly faster and higher than the others by a considerable margin. Where George was lucky to survive, and where he was deservedly rewarded with both a DFM and a DFC, was during his tour on Wellingtons with 115 Squadron during 1941-1942, this at a time when the casualty rate was up to four times higher than during the last year of the war. From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999: GEORGE, Squadron Leader Allan, DFC, DFM, (pff). NZ403441 & 70064; Born Hawera, 7 Apr 1918; RNZAF 29 Sep 1940 to 15 Oct 1955, Res. to 7 Apr 1973; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Medal (31 Oct 1941): [115 Sqn RAF (Wellington)] One night in October, 1941, this airman was the pilot of an aircraft detailed to attack Duisburg. On the outward journey, shortly after passing over the Zuider Zee, both engines of his aircraft commenced to lose power and the aircraft would not maintain height. In spite of this Sergeant George resolutely continued his flight to the target area, where subjected to most accurate and intense anti-aircraft fire and unable to take complete avoiding action he released a very heavy bomb. Although his aircraft was gradually losing height and in spite of being further handicapped by an unserviceable radio transmitter Sergeant George skilfully flew back to this country and made a safe landing. Throughout, this pilot displayed outstanding coolness, courage and determination. On a previous occasion Sergeant George carried his mission through to a successful conclusion in conditions of great difficulty.
Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (4 Aug 1942): [115 Sqn RAF (Wellington)] Pilot Officer George is an outstanding captain. He has at all times endeavoured to reach his allotted target and press home his attack. On a recent occasion his aircraft was damaged by anti-aircraft fire whilst over Essen. The main fuel feed-pipe was fractured and although temporary repairs were carried out by various members of his crew, fuel was being lost at the rate of one gallon per minute. Despite this, Pilot Officer George skilfully and determinedly flew the aircraft to this country and landed safely although his fuel was practically exhausted. This Officer has participated in raids on Stettin, Bremen, Poissy, Rostock, Warnemunde, amongst many other important enemy targets. His leadership and courage have been outstanding.
Pathfinder service with 139(PFF)Sqn RAF (Mosquito). Took part in the ferry of the first Mosquitoes from Australia to NZ in 1946 and two from UK to NZ in 1947. Errol

"The Pathfinders were the elite - the top pilots and navigators from the RAF's Bomber Command. Each one had to have completed at least one tour of operations. A tour equalled 30 bombing missions. And they had to volunteer. There was an 80 per cent fatality rate for the bombing missions. For the Pathfinders, it was 90 per cent." More nonsense, I'm afraid, but all too typical of the news media these days. The assertion that the 'fatality rate' was 80 or 90 percent is of course patently ridiculous. Furthermore, when the Pathfinder Force was created it was by the simple expedient of transferring enmass Nos 7, 35, 83 and 156 squadrons from their respective Groups - a case of being volunteered rather than volunteering. Almost none of the crews therein would have completed a tour at that point. Subsequently, of course, individual crews (not just pilots and navs) were encouraged to volunteer for the PFF as it grew and losses were incurred. Errol

Yes it's a pity about the inaccuracies but at the same time it is good to see that Allan has been paid tribute to in the mainstream media. So many of this country's proper genuine heroes are forgotten, pushed aside by the media's clamber to create faux heroes of waste of space celebrities.
