I am rather sad about this death for several reasons. One is he was a distant cousin, though I never met him, my great-grandmother was a Loftus. The second reason was he was apparently a mine of info on family history and told a fair bit to Mum some years ago, however I never got the opportunity to ever meet or speak with him. Mum has been under the impression for some years that Graham had already passed away so we were both surprised to find he had not, till this week!! We were only talking about him recently and some info he'd passed on to Mum about other family members who served in WWI and WWII. Lastly, we had no idea he'd himself served in the RNZAF in WWII!! This is really gutting, I'd have loved to have interviewed him if I'd known. Bugger!! LOFTUS, Graham Leslie: (Serviceman No. 439197 RNZAF.) Peacefully at Auckland, on May 16, 2015, aged 90. Loved father of Alison, David and Nigel, husband of the late Margaret. Friends are invited to a simple graveside service for Graham will be held at Waerenga Cemetery, Keith Road, Waerenga, Waikato, on Monday, May 25, at 2.30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Starship Children's Health. Communications to the Loftus family c/- PO Box 147, Huntly 3470. Have you any info Errol on what Graham did in the RNZAF? His brother David was a fighter pilot who served with No. 81 Squadron RAF and was killed in a dogfight over Bone Harbour. My friend Alan Peart DFC was flying with him at the time and saw David Loftus get killed.

From the Canterbury Aero Club Facebook: "We deeply regret to advise of the passing of our friend, colleague and CFI, Jay Peters last night, after brief illness. Jay was much admired for his flying prowess, his music and his people skills. He leaves a gap and a great legacy. We extend our condolences to Jay's wife, Helen, all extended family and to his many friends. Rest in peace, Jay." Very sad. Always enjoyed a chat with Jay about instructing, tail wheels, and such. www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/68660805/guard-of-honour-for-dedicated-flying-instructor

That was a well written article on Jay Peters. I first met him during a break his band was having on a Thursday night at the Russley. It was very much an airport workers' bar and was frequented by the Air Force guys doing the ice trips as well. Jay was in his element and would be only too keen to chat aviation and pilot talk. Missed by many in the industry I am sure.

Sad news, I just heard from his grandson Pete Sharp that well known WWII RNZAF veteran and No. 30 Squadron historian Wally Ingham passed away today, 27th of May. Wally ran the No. 30 Squadron RNZAF Association for many years compiling their newsletter and running reunions, and he must surely have been close to being the last living member of the squadron. He also wrote the books 'We Also Served' (his autobiography of his life as ground crew in the RNZAF) and 'The Avengers' which was the No. 30 Squadron RNZAF story. I have known Wally for many years, he made me an honorary member of the No. 30 Squadron Association and I created a website for the squadron. He was a great bloke. RIP mate.

I am pretty sure that is not Wally's correct Service Number. Quite right Dave. It should read NZ391292, his number as stated on page 147 of his autobiography We Also Served. No mention of 'David' being part of his name there either. Errol
