from the Wairarapa Times-Age....Pioneer Masterton topdresser pilot dies7:10AM - Thursday, June 04, 2015HIGH TIMES: Clive Thorne when he was 50.ONE OF New Zealand's pioneer aerial topdressers has died at the age of 87.
Clive Thorne passed away on May 30th at Lansdowne Court and is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie, five children, 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr Thorne will be remembered as beginning the job of topdressing when the practice was in its infancy in Wairarapa in the early 1950s.
Mr Thorne and his identical twin, Colin, were born in New Plymouth and had a love of flying from an early age.
The brothers joined the Air Training Corps during World War II, but the war ended before they saw action.
Instead the pair joined the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club, where they learnt to fly Tiger Moths.
The brothers spent 1947-48 in Japan with the occupying forces, where they represented New Zealand in the British Commonwealth Occupational Forces in swimming, wrestled in the All Japan Championships and played in the army band.
In 1952 Mr Thorne received his commercial pilot's licence and he was soon flying all over the North Island in Air Contracts' Tiger Moths.
When that contract ended, Mr Thorne worked for Wanganui Aero Work and later the Manawatu Aerial Topdressing Company, where he flew Cessna 180s.
In his spare time, he enjoyed aerobatics, and won several awards. In 1966 Mr Thorne and his brother were working for Fieldair when Colin crashed, suffering serious injuries which put an end to his career as a pilot.
Not long after the crash, Clive Thorne stopped flying commercially.
He retained his passion, however, and later joined the Sport & Vintage Aviation Society based at the Masterton aerodrome. He went on to be head of department at the Government Life Insurance Corporation, where he worked for 10 years before retiring.
When he was not flying, Mr Thorne, who grew up in a musical family, played piano, saxophone and clarinet, and was a member of several Masterton bands, including Trad 7.
He taught music privately and in schools, and passed on his love for music to his children, who were part of a family band which sometimes played around the town.
He was the founder of Masterton's first judo club, a lifetime member of the Aero Club, and an avid squash player.• A commemoration of Mr Thorne's life, which will include a special presentation, will be held at Rosewood Funeral Home, 415 Queen Street, Masterton, today at 2pm..www.nzherald.co.nz/wairarapa-times-age/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503414&objectid=11459627

First met Frank when I started with James in the early 60's. He was Ops Manager/Pilot in Hamilton at the time. He later went to Robertson's where he stayed for the rest of his career. He went to school with my cousin, Bryan Cox and shared time with him in his early Air Force days. I have been kept up with what has been happening to him from a fellow Fleet air Arm mate who lives in Warkworth and plays at the Warkworth Golf Club. The last time I saw Frank was at the launch of ehe restoration of AZL.

I was told a few years back that Frank Jarvis had suffered a major stroke and lost the power of speech. Was that correct? Very sad if true.
