Our thanks to the Dr's and the caring staff of Star 1. According to John's wishes a private service has been held. Not a bad innings for someone who spent three and a half years as a PoW of the Japanese! The following notes about him were compiled by the late Colin Hanson: VIBERT, Warrant Officer John George. NZ402227; Born Auckland, 18 Dec 1921. RNZAF 28 Jul 1940 to 25 Mar 1946. Pilot. "Trained in NZ and the UK and posted to 79 Sqn RAF (Hurricane) in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) on 28 Oct 1941 arriving Batavia 3 Feb 1942. On 11 Feb sent to Palembang with other replacement pilots to join Hurricane squadrons operating out of P1 and P2. Japanese paratroopers dropped on P1 on 14 Feb and the aircrew were ordered to evacuate. When passing through P2, en route for Java, W/O (then a Sgt) Vibert unofficially attached himself to 258 Sqn. From P2 he travelled by rail and boat back to Batavia. On 21 Feb 1942 258 Sqn was ordered to supply 6 pilots (together with 6 pilots from 488 Sqn) to form 605 Sqn. Sgt Vibert volunteered to take the place of Sgt Doug Nicholls (who had drawn a low card when the cards were cut to see who was staying behind and who was wounded). 605 Sqn operated out of Tjililitan in a defensive role except for a sortie on 1 March 1942 when the squadron attacked Japanese troops landing at Indramaju, Java. During the late evening of 1 March 605 Sqn personnel were ordered to proceed to the port of Tjilatjap on the south coast of Java to be evacuated by sea. On 2/3 March the squadron regrouped at Bandung and then the aircrew were ordered to proceed ahead of the ground crew to Tjilitjap to try a reach the evacuation ships, only to find that when they arrived on 5 March the only ship had been sunk. The pilots then moved to Tjamis on 6 March; Tasikmalaya on 7 March, then to Neglisari, 8 March, where they met up with 605 Sqn ground crew on the day the Dutch surrendered Java. They stayed at Neglisari before the Dutch Command ordered them to move to Palempoek to await Japanese orders. The first order was to proceed to Garoet to meet up with other Allied servicemen. They started to walk toward Batavia before being put on a train. Arriving at Batavia on 24 March they were imprisoned at Boei Gledok prison to begin life as a PoW. PoW #3703K. W/O Vibert was imprisoned at the following: -Boei Glodok (a native prison) where their first job was filling in the bomb craters at Kemajoran airport where the runways had deliberately been blown up. Then wrecking cars and trucks at a transport park, or crating engine parts, all to be sent back to Japan. -Tanjong Priok, a camp alongside the docks at Batavia, loading and unloading ships - mainly bombs and drums of petrol. From here all 605 Sqn personnel at Tanjong Priok were sent to Surabaja to embark for Ambon, where they built an aerodrome. While at Surabaja W/O Vibert had to have an abscess lanced and, being unfit to travel, was sent back to Cycle Camp, Batavia. - He was then placed in a draft sent to Pangkalin Balai Camp nr Palembang, where he was the only New Zealander. -Sometime about the end of May/early June 1945 those fit enough to travel were sent to Changi Jail which he regarded as an old man's home compared with his previous accommodation. At Changi he was very sick and was lucky enough to meet up with three New Zealanders of 1 Aerodrome Construction Unit who had been left behind in Singapore. They looked after him and then got him an easy job in the blacksmiths shop making nails." Safe Changi, 6 Sep 1945 returning to NZ by air. Errol

A service to celebrate Jacks life will be held at All Saints Chapel, Purewa Crematorium, 100-102 St Johns Road Meadowbank, on Thursday 6 August at 1:30pm. From colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999: STAFFORD, Flight Lieutenant John Harry, DFC. NZ421783; Born New Lynn, Auckland, 19 Aug 1922; RNZAF 7 Mar 1942 to 16 Apr 1946; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (6 May 1945): [486 Sqn RNZAF (Typhoon/Tempest)] Acting Flight Lieutenant Stafford is a fighter pilot of outstanding ability, determination and courage. He has attacked a large variety of targets and during the period of flying bomb activity, he destroyed at least 8 of these missiles. On one occasion, whilst returning from a patrol over the Munster area, his aircraft was very badly damaged by anti-aircraft fire.[*] Displaying superb airmanship Flight Lieutenant Stafford flew the crippled aircraft back to base. While flying on armed reconnaissance he has destroyed at least 1 enemy aircraft and damaged others. In addition he has inflicted considerable damage on the enemy’s locomotives, mechanical transport and rolling stock. [*] The damage to his aircraft arose from a collision with high tension power lines over Germany, followed by anti-aircraft cannon fire hits in the wing and fuselage, on 22 Dec 1944. Notwithstanding the damage caused he was still able to fly his aircraft 200 miles back to his base in Holland. Flt Lt Stafford was posted to 486 Sqn in Nov 1943, but spent Mar-Apr 1944 with the de Havilland propeller test division, before returning to his squadron. He carried out 230 sorties including dive-bombing attacks on V-1 rocket sites, shipping reconnaissance sorties, assisted in providing air cover for the D-Day and Arnhem landings, carried out numerous ground attack sorties - during which many vehicles, locomotives and railway rolling-stock were destroyed or damaged - and supported the Rhine crossing during which he shot down four German barrage balloons. He also shared, with R D Bremner (qv), the destruction of the first Me 262 jet destroyed by 486 Sqn. In addition he destroyed an Me 109 and an FW 190, shared in the destruction of a Do 217 and an Me 109 and damaged two Ju 52s on the ground. In Feb 1945 he became a Flt Cdr on 486 Sqn before a posting to 83 Group HQ, followed by a further posting as a Flt Cdr, to 80 Sqn RAF (Tempest). Errol

LEGGETT, William Donald J. (Don)(NZ13450 RNZN KOREA, RNZAF U13450)(President & Life Member Hamilton Branch NZKVA): Passed away peacefully at Waikato Hospital on 29 July 2015. Much loved husband of Phyllis and step-father of David & Andrea. Many thanks to Dr. Valma, Dr. Sebastian and the nursing staff at Waikato Hospital for their care of Don. A funeral service for Don will be held at the White Rose Chapel, 75 Cook Street Hamilton East, on Saturday 1 August at 1.30pm. Followed by his interment in the RSA Lawn at Hamilton Park Cemetery. Hmmm, I was just talking with Mum and she informed me that this chap, Don Leggett, was my late Nana's cousin. I'd had no idea. That's the second old relation in a few months who'd served in the RNZAF that has died and I found out later they were in the service. Bother it! I'd never heard of him, but Mum knew him but was unaware of him having served in the Armed Forces. Does anyone here know more about him and what he did in the Navy and the RNZAF please? Mum and I are curious now. Mum said he was born in 1922 so he could well have served in the Navy in WWII as well as Korea. Any clues please?
