The following comes from Norm Empson via Bob Howe:
Hello all,
Sad news I’m afraid. Bruce Tayler passed away in Australia on the 23rd of April. He died at home with his son Brett beside him. I know that the thoughts of all of you will be with Brett, and with Bruce’s wider family.
Bruce e mailed me earlier this week to ask me to liaise for him between his son Brett and the RNZAF Network. I immediately replied saying that I was happy to do so. At the time he was in a Brisbane Hospice but was expecting to go home to family. In his e mail Bruce said that at the end Brett would bring his ashes back to NZ, to be placed with those of his wife Trish in Hamilton.
I believe Bruce graduated from 24 aircrew course and I first met him when we were both on Freighters on 41 Squadron at RAF Changi.in 59/60. Following that tour he went on to fly on 40 Squadron right through to the late 60s. He held many transport related posts in his RNZAF career and around 1986 he held a post in Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War.
He will be missed. Best regards to all from Bob

From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : MARBECK, Group Captain Arthur Ross, (cvsa). P81387; Born Auckland, 19 Mar 1942; RNZAF 7 Jan 1964 to 19 Mar 1995; Pilot. Hon Aide-de-Camp to HE the Governor-General 1 Nov 1984 to 31 Oct 1985. Citation Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air (QB1978): Squadron Leader Marbeck joined the RNZAF as a University Officer Cadet in 1964 and graduated as a pilot in 1966. During 1976/77 he completed a tour with No 41 Sqn in Singapore where, as a Flt Lt, he was appointed as the Bristol Freighter Section Commander. At a time when the remainder of the RNZAF fleet of Bristol Freighters was being withdrawn from service, Sqn Ldr Marbeck’s enthusiasm, diligence, and dextrous handling of both manpower and aircraft resources enabled No 41 Sqn to maintain, and in some areas improve on, its fine tradition of service in the area. Not only did he bear the brunt of routine flying, crew recategorisation test flights, and administration, but he performed excellently in his role as a VIP Freighter captain. He flew several Ambassadorial flights around the outlying islands of Indonesia which drew very favourable comment from the two Ambassadors involved and the NZ Force Commander. During his two year tour Sqn Ldr Marbeck achieved 1000 hours of ‘in-theatre’ Freighter flying. Because of the nature of Freighter support tasks flown in S E Asia, Sqn Ldr Marbeck was frequently called upon either as the aircraft captain involved or in his capacity as Freighter Section Commander to provide solutions to technical and other problems experienced in isolated locations. His resourceful, imaginative, and thoroughly professional handling of such problems enabled the squadron to complete many tasks which may otherwise have not come to fruition.
