The Auckland based DC-3 will be flying down, and probably be based at Queenstown. Fares from Ardmore to Wanaka, on the Thursday, then back Monday... TBA ....and then Wanaka to Queenstown each day, and return will be posted when we decide on fares. It is difficult to predict fuel prices - but expressions of interest are welcome. Please email us on flydc3@paradise.net.nz

Will have to start planning another aero club trip down to this one I think - I haven't been to WoW since 2006.

I applied for the leave (and got it approved) in October last year.
I've got two weeks off with Easter being the middle weekend of my leave.

Yeah... might have to make the pilgrimage south again... have only missed 2 shows (1998 & 2000) when my 2 kids were born. Will be nice to just front up as an "ice cream licker" without all the work that has preceded the last 6 shows!

I last went in 1990. Apparently it's changed!!!
My first club trip ;D ...Four blokes, two from Stratford, two from Hawera took a PA26-161 low through the weather over the straight to some little paddock at Omaka to swap around pilots. ...flying as a trainee into Queenstown (to refuel as the queue at Wanaka was huge) only to be told I'm #13 on approach... a shock to any country pilot... ...Being picked up by the club captain and wife (on honeymoon) and fitting 6 of us with luggage in Corolla at Wanaka...
I remember when... Tim Wallace manned the venison bbq (which he had caught earlier in the week) Saturday night during the barn dance... and hitch-hiking back into Wanaka at mid-night in the back of some delivery truck and being dropped off at The Edgewater (but we were staying in a horrible motel at the edge of town...).
Yup... time for another trip I think ;D
I better get Omaka out the way before suggesting it. 8 days to go before a weeks holiday...

There's been rumours for years of a B-17 attending "the next" Wanaka show. I am interested to see what will attend, especially if the CAF are involved again. After the Zero I heard talk of a Bearcat.

I really enjoyed my one & only Warbirds over Wanaka in 2004, Baz, Ken & I left booking accommodation a little late but managed to score a caravan which was quite cosy. My Mum & Step dad Stioux have done quite a few trips down there helping out in the merchandising tent. one year my poor mother broke her ankle stepping out of a port a loo & into a rabbit hole. One of my nephews was enjoying a look through one of the books Stioux has with pics of the Polikarpov that hit a duck. Young Anthony wondered out loud what the duck said when it was hit by the plane... Stioux's reply inspired me to write a little verse.
In Wanaka some years ago A Warbird dealt a fatal blow To a luckless little duck Hit midflight he came unstuck The fuselage was detailed with feathers, beak & entrails And the birds last words I fancy that they might have been Quack quack splat!

Heh, I do like that poem! Especially as it avoids the obvious rhymes-with-duck.
And I've always thought that having the duck on the side of the aircraft as a 'kill' was in very good humour!

I purchased my Gold Pass today from the i-Site in Masterton (of all places). I was talking to Mandy Deans at Omaka during Easter Weekend and she told me all of the i-Sites around the country have them on sale.
I've just booked my flights for Warbirds over Wanaka too. I'm going to fly to Hokitika next year, then pick up a rental car and spend a couple of days driving to Wanaka, staying overnight at Franz Josef Glacier and Haast. After the airshow, I'm going to drive to Fox Glacier and spend a couple of nights there before heading back up to Hokitika for a night before I fly home. I've already booked all of that accommodation.
Now I've just got to book the accommodation for Easter weekend. I see from an online searth that there is still heaps of accommodation vacant at Wanaka, so I may perhaps even stay there next time instead of Queenstown or Cromwell.

I was pleasantly shocked when Mrs fwx made bookings for flights and accomodation in Wanaka over Easter weekend, completely of her own volition, for the whole fan-damily. She must have felt gulity because I didn't whinge (well, not much!) over missing Omaka this year. Now only have to organise WOW tickets, once I figure out the mix of 3-day and day passes.
So see you all there!!
Actually Mrs fwx has been excelling herself lately - she also gave way to my impeccably-stated case for a camera upgrade, and I now have a brand-new D7000 burning a hole in my camera bag ... hopefully I will have finished reading the manual by Easter 2012!

fwx: You are going to love that D7000! Its very nearly a match for my D700 at half the price There are some great second hand Nikon Zoom lenses on Trademe at the moment to...

Thanks stereoimage, yes, I am in love with my D7000 already, and can't wait to point it at some planes. It gets a workout every Saturday with kids' sports, and I am really impressed with viewfinder, quietness, autofocus, exposure, sharpness/resolution, colour balance, skin tones, you name it.
I love my 70-300 VR, and can hardly believe how much better it is with the D7000, but know that it's not really long enough for airshows. Sadly, don't think I can justify the $'s for a bigger and better lens at this stage, but thanks for the tip, will have a good look around when I go to put my old camera on Trademe!
Cheers, Chris

I've seen all of that (except the kids sports bit) when upgrading from my D80.

Hi Errol,
It is a D70s - so my upgrade has probably been a very similar experience to yours.
The D70s is 6 years old now, but I had been very happy with it until I started to see the D7000 reviews. Have been more than impressed - I think its the bigger viewfinder as much as anything, but the camera just feels very easy to use, and results have been stunning.
Cheers, Chris
