40 jets to make low altitude visit to Warbirds An impressive array of up to 40 privately-owned jet aircraft will make a low altitude visit to the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow next April as part of the Hong Kong to Christchurch Silver Fern Air Race. Following races from London to Christchurch in 1953 and Singapore to Christchurchin 1987, a group of businessmen and aviationenthusiasts, some based in Queenstown, are holding a Hong Kong to ChristchurchAir Race from 26th March, 2012 until 8th April 2012. The race aims to boost travel and business opportunities between Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. The aircraft will fly from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur then on to Melbourne before concluding the race in Christchurch. Organisers had deliberately chosen Christchurch as the destination to illustrate to the world that the city is alive and well. A scenic extension will see the corporate jets traverse Fiordland and fly over Warbirds Over Wanaka. "Some air race followers and participants willtake Gold Passes and other hospitality options at the Airshow and the spectacle of seeing large corporate jets flying over will be amazing" said Mandy Deans, Warbirds Over Wanaka event manager. Ms Deans said the Silver Fern Air Race fitted the show's international mandate and enabled organisers to further support the aviation world and Christchurch, from whence many patrons came. "The Silver Fern Air Race is delighted to be involved with Warbirds Over Wanaka with entrants pleased they are able to fly over around 65,000 spectators" says Ron Collins, CEO of the Silver Fern Air Race. Exactly when during the show the fly over would take place is yet to be finalised. Ticket sales for Warbirds Over Wanaka were excellent with much interest from around New Zealand and Australia in particular, Ms Deans said. Ticket purchases may be made at www.warbirdsoverwanaka.com or Free phone 0800 224 224 NZ or 1300 798 550 Australia. www.voxy.co.nz/lifestyle/40-jets-make-low-altitude-visit-wow/5/95884

It looks as if Wanaka will be a noisy place next Easter if there are forty private jets in the race, and no doubt Vampires, Strikemaster, L-39's, and the supposed visit by USAF, RAAF and RAF jets too.

I'm in the process of organising a convoy of aircraft from Auckland Aero Club and associates - really looking forward to it, haven't been since 2006.

40 low level jets... now that's going to be a nightmare to organise without an earlier briefing...
I also hear on the grapevine that WOW have told Ian Brodie that his services in the commentary box aren't required in 2012... he's understandably gutted!

What? No Ian Brodie! That's just not right!
I've got the possibility of going - but if it's a choice between WoW and the RNZAF at Ohakea the week earlier, then Ohakea it is.

Air force will conclude anniversary celebration at Warbirds airshow Fri, 26 Aug 2011 Many former air force personnel are expected to descend on Wanaka next year as the 75th anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Air Force is celebrated at the biennial Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow. Wing Commander Bill Blaikie said yesterday the RNZAF participation in the show would be the air force's final event in a month of celebrations around New Zealand. "It is a great opportunity for the air force to celebrate our last 75 years [and] also to showcase our emerging capabilities with new and upgraded aircraft," he said. The airshow will focus on New Zealand's military aviation history and display aircraft that served in a wide range of operations. The programme includes early monoplanes, World War 2-era fighters and modern jets and transporters. Operations in Vietnam, the Middle East, the Antarctic, Africa, the South Pacific, and Eastern Europe would be recalled at the Easter holiday event, manager Mandy Deans said in a media release yesterday. RNZAF aircraft on show will include Sioux, Seasprite and Iroquois helicopters, Corsair, Kittyhawk and Mustang fighters and Vampire and Strikemaster jets. The RNZAF will also have a major ground display and recruiting tents. Ms Deans said the show would be "hugely entertaining" and "a great opportunity to learn about our history for our young people". The airshow begins on April 6 and concludes on April 8. www.odt.co.nz/your-town/wanaka/175051/air-force-will-conclude-anniversary-celebration-warbirds-airshow

Has anyone else had a close look at the poster? I received my latest issue of Classic Wings and the poster is the back cover. Lovely and reminiscent of some of the old-school air pageant posters. The thing that caught my eye was the OSRCo Corsair, Photoshopped with inaccurate RAF fuselage roundel. I decided to have a look at the other aircraft and saw that, despite the work done to "correct" the Corsair, the Avenger clearly has a US fuselage roundel! Nice work.

The different types are representing aircraft that have served in the RNZAF over the last 75 years that have appeared at the Wanaka airshow. I noted the Corsair roundel and the Avenger too. The AFC Avenger did appear at two airshows in US markings, Mangere and Wigram in 1992. Just after the Wigram show we wheeled it into the hangar and painted it into Plonky's colours.
The cool thing is most of those types seen will likely be there. I doubt they'll get a Macchi, Skyhawk, Avenger, Andover or 727 this time though sadly. I'd love to see all those types on the airshow circuit again someday.

I too liked the concept of the promotional picture on the back page of my new Classic Wings mag. But...I don't get it! There are countless photographs of these aircraft performing at the Wanaka show and myriads of other occasions - and in RNZAF uniform. Why the need to resort to less-than-realistic, inaccurate measures, using generic, doctored images? Good grief, I've got loads of pics (albeit amateur) that I've taken at 5 Wanaka shows and a host of others I've attended that I'd be happy to make available (and I'm guessing I'm not alone)...just ask! Am I being too critical? This is a world-class event and deserves better representation I believe.

It appears the Air Race is no longer ( silverfernairrace.com/home) ....although it's still shown in the news section on the Warbirds over Wanaka website. Makes you wonder just how serious the organisers of the Race were, the website seems professional enough however there are a few spelling mistakes in the cancellation message A shame, would have made for a spectacular sight at WOW....

The Aviation news website has it as starting off on 26 of March which would have been too early for Wanaka surely.

I understand from a local Wanaka based mate the Hurricane flew on Monday - first time in ages. Allegedly being viewed by a wealthy Aussie who has his cheque book out. I do hope she's flying at the airshow, despite the no doubt horrendous cost of insurance... but it would great to see the old girl airborne once more if she's to be sold soon.
