Wonderful head-on P-40 shot oldfokker, complete with streaming shell cases, thanks!
And yours Gavin - I occasionally looked around in amazement at a couple of grandstand's-worth of mostly 'mature' gentlemen waving to the 'planes and grinning like little kids ... those pilots and owners bring a lot of joy to a lot of people. And your photos do as well!

Nice! Very tempting to add a muzzle flash to the other side to make it balanced... :-)

Brilliant! Is it heat haze that makes it seem the spent cartridges are spewing from the port side only?

Thanks all for the P-40 comments - a fluke of the PSH technique ( Point-Shoot-Hope ! ) Dave - cheap seats proved better value than trying to shoot RWY29 threshold movements from behind the Fire Tender and other assorted vehicles ! Errol C - not tempted by such photographic debauchery. ;D Although a tighter crop and colour tweaking might be useful before heading to the printer. Flyjoe180 - just luck that the port wing had the cleared hillside as a backdrop to add definition to the cartridges. I'll keep it ! Mick

Great set of shots Jason - that hustling Hunter was hard to draw a bead on. The KB brethren add wing-walking to the display ! Mick

That last one is a great shot, was nice to get a group photo of the Hercules crew following a good flight, always try and do that. Last shot from me for now, I did get the flash on both sets of guns but will be keeping that one for the Warbirds Over Wanaka 2012 book that Jill Herron and I have just started working on. By the way did anyone get a shot of the Yak 3 behind the Hercules overhead the airfield on Friday afternoon? I made a suggestion that next time the Kittyhawk fires its guns at the show we should get the pilot on the PA to let the crowd know the exact time that the guns are being fired so we can all aim to get that one in a million photo.

What is the original size of the P-40 head-on strafing run image? Crop that in a bit and as long as it doesn't get too small, it's probably an image that a number of magazines would buy for real money on novelty factor alone. I don't imagine there are many head-on shots of machine-gun fire out there. Update: Ha-ha, spoke too soon. Well done Gavin! Ok... How many other shooters out there got cool head-on shots of the P-40 pumping lead? (or at least wadding)

By the way did anyone get a shot of the Yak 3 behind the Hercules overhead the airfield on Friday afternoon? Bit rough unfortunately - too much altitude and direct sun. Can hardly spot the flouros strapped onto the ramp ! Mick

Ha-ha! Didn't realise Mick was a famous elite photog. I completely fell for his modesty...
Here's me telling him I think he might sell a shot... Don't I feel silly.

A bit earlier in the flare release. Great shot, was a bit gutted we didn't get to see this at Ohakea a couple of weeks ago. My 3 year-old would have loved it too

Obiwan reporting in!! I attended WOW on the Sunday as part of a long weekend holiday and birthday gift for my gf. I gave her the option of us going to the airshow or not and luckily she said yes! :-) This was the first airshow that my other half has been to and it was interesting as a semi-regular airshow attendee to get her response to the show. Her comments: "Non-stop action, so fast, so low, so exciting. Better than a movie!!" Now for a few pics, nothing near the standard of others but never mind. You can't attend an airshow without posing in front of some aircraft. Obi and the A109. It was smaller than I thought it would be. My better half. Smiling and the airshow proper hasn't even started yet!! This was very impressive and a highlight of many for me. It was incredible to see this big aircraft fliying around in the distance. It even looked huge circling over Wanaka in the distance. I wonder what they thought in Wanaka!? This last shot was taken by my gf. She paints as a hobby. Maybe she should take up photography? We arrived at the airfield between 8:00 and 8:30am and had no trouble/delay getting in or finding a park. Finding our way around the airfield was no issue and we had enough time to find the silver stand, take some shots of the static aircraft before taking our seats in time for the start of the air display. All displays were impressive, but there were of course, several highlights: I'd read about the Tiger Moth display and really couldn't believe my eyes and that was just the take off sequence. I've never seen a Tiger flown so impressively. Great to see the Avenger back in the air at Wanaka and also to see the 'batsman' guide him in for a landing attempt and wave off. The Hunter was great. A fast arrival and superb display of this aircraft. Another great display by all of the RNZAF aircraft present. The only disappointment being the non-display by the Red Checkers, however the Herk in particular made up for this. First time I've seen the flare release done - most impressive. Makes me wish for a better camera. Loved the formation flypast of the Dakotas accompanied by the two Spitfires and two Mustangs. Reminded me of the formation flypast at Wanaka in 2004 to commemorate D-Day. The airfield attack was, as ever, impressive but it was particularly memorable to have the P40N firing it's guns as part of the display. Well done and thanks to the organisers, volunteers, RNZAF, private aircraft owners and pilots who helped to make a very enjoyable conclusion to a great holiday in one of the best parts of the country. WOW and other local airshows have their own distinctive NZ flavour and are something that all NZ aviation enthusiasts can be proud of :-)
