I thought there was a Caribou at least at each of the shows. Maybe I am thinking of something different.

Good point about the F-111. Yes that was there. I definately don't recall a Caribou at WOW 1992, but maybe there was??

Pretty sure there wasn't, nor at 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, or 2004 (the ones I have been to). Semi routine RAAF participation at non military shows has been a fairly recent phenomenon here I think (2000's on). That's from memory though, so I could be wrong. There was an RAAF C-130 at the Auckland expo in 1992, but I'm struggling to recall any other time they were here at a show the RNZAF wasn't organising prior to the mid-2000's or so.

Apart from the RNZAF Air Shows, the RAAF were at show in Hamilton in the 80s (1982?) with a F-111

Mind you the FB post is a bit cryptic, a few people asked if the RAAF will be there and WOW replied "yes, but not in 2012"??

That Facebook page is totally confusing. So are they or aren't they going to be there?

The first visit by RAAF aircraft to Warbirds Over Wanaka was the F111 in 2006.
The latest news on the warbirdsoverwanaka.com website is the appearance of the Hunter.

Just to clarify what I was meaning with the RAAF at NZ airshows, I wasn't meaning in general, just civilian shows where their regular presence has become almost routine/expected, e.g. Omaka and Wanaka

That Facebook page is totally confusing. So are they or aren't they going to be there? warbirds have confirmed no RAAF in 2012, RAAF says they will be back in 2014 I suspected that with the announcement of the hunter doing high speed runs ie they nneeded something fast n loud when the RAAF said they are a no show. Good organising on the whole methinks given circumstances

Yeah just read the same on Facebook. Disappointing given they are in country the week before. Time for the RNZAF to step up (like their slogan!) and put on a good turnout (i.e. ALL of their aircraft types). But somehow I doubt it... NZ Warbirds will save the day again no doubt.

Well, it is a warbird airshow, modern Air Force stuff is just ephemera really.

Gault to cook up flight display for Wanaka Voxy News Engine Friday, 2 March, 2012 - 14:21 A display pilot who will be looking to put an extra five percent magic into his performance at the Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow this Easter is celebrity chef, Simon Gault. Mr Gault, who is currently judging on TVNZ's MasterChef New Zealand series, is also an aerobatic pilot, gliding instructor and experienced display pilot. Well-known for putting 'an extra five percent magic' into his cooking, the award-winning restaurateur will fly a high-performance Thunder Mustang. The Thunder Mustang is a three-quarter scale replica of the WWII-era P-51 Mustang. Inspired by his father Bryan, a former RNZAF instructor and Air New Zealand training captain, Gault began his flying career in gliders. "My Dad always insisted that because of the uncertainties of medicals and therefore livelihood I should focus on some other career and fly as a hobby," Mr Gault said. Once he had gained an instructor rating in gliders his father relented and taught him to fly powered aircraft, progressing to Harvards, he said. At the Oshkosh Airshow in the United States Mr Gault saw a Thunder Mustang, an aircraft he describes as a "hot rod toy". "Never one to do things by halves I decided that I would own one of these replica P-51 aircraft." He formed a small syndicate to secure a Thunder Mustang and sourced one in South Africa. Test pilot approval for the aircraft was granted to Bryan Gault on the basis of his flying experience in P-51 Mustangs in his early air force days. Information from original pilot notes written for WWII Mustangs were used to help the father and son learn how to fly the Thunder Mustang. The aircraft can climb to 10,000ft in just over two minutes and has a maximum speed of 603kph. "The performance of the Thunder Mustang is nothing short of phenomenal particularly during take -off and climb. It does require a level of attention well beyond the average light aircraft," Mr Gault Snr said. Powered by a Falconer V-12 engine, the Thunder Mustang is superior to the aircraft that inspired it in many aspects of performance. Simon Gault, who lives in Auckland, will do a solo performance at Warbirds Over Wanaka. He would not be doing any cooking on his visit south but said he was looking forward to sampling products at the Wine and Food Expo at the airshow, but only, of course, after his flying was completed each day. www.voxy.co.nz/entertainment/gault-cook-flight-display-wanaka/5/116517

No reason why they couldnt drag out the old TA-4K Skyhawk that is still stashed at Ohakea or will politics as per usual say that Jet Aircraft from the sad days of 2001 be hidden away and not talked about or shown???

If you are talking about the Ohakea airshow Jase then yes NZ6257 will be on display (I believe it is being given a spruce up in the paint dept especially) as will a Macchi.
Wanaka already has a Skyhawk, Vampire and Strikemaster in the new Museum, they just can't make any noise as none have an engine fitted!

Any news on the status of the Hurricane? It isn't in the Wings & Wheels Museum any more... I'm hoping it has been moved to another hangar to prepare it for a return to flight!

At this time in three weeks, I will have settled into my room at Lake Wanaka Lodge, after no doubt popping out to Wanaka Airport during the afternoon for a sneak look at what is going on. Counting down the days now....with the appetizer of the airshow at Ohakea the weekend before!
