Am I right in thinking that the RAAF has a couple of designated solo display pilots? Usually there is one dedicated Hornet solo display pilot, who does the airshows for a few years. They guy who finished up end 2010 flew at Whenuapai in 2009 Will be interesting if a dedicated RAAF Rhino (Super Hornet) solo is established, my guess is not, as the classic model appears to have the edge on agility and whenever I've seen a Rhino display (even in the US) they seem to hang tanks and fake ordnance off it ie do not do a clean display.

I think there is some degree of hush hush on the Rhino's too. The fact they look so similar to an F-18a must make it easier to not show them off so much.
When they launched over here the media were not allowed to take direct shots of the air intakes for some reason.

In my opinion it is not overseas display teams that should be a major feature of the anniversary, but instead the actual people who have made our RNZAF great over the years. there are still surviving veterans of the pre-WWII RNZAF and Territorial Air Force around, plus numerous wartime veterans and heroes, and a multitude of the post-war types each with a story to tell. It's high time that the Government funded a decent television series on the RNZAF's long and important history.

Any kind of media would be good, Dave. I'm astounded at what I've learned over the last year. That's how I found this forum, nearly every search for info wound up back here.
I'd also like to see some films about NZ pilots in the Pacific, North Africa, Europe, Malaya, Vietnam, Korea. Its not like there is a shortage of stories.

I agree with both you and Strikemaster Dave. I am going to a memorial for some 85 Sqn guys on the 12th March (one of whom is a New Zealander so I will do a report on here for you...). Chris the guy who is organising it apologised that there were no BoB vets going but I said its enough to meet the WW2 vets who are going to be there and the families! Dee

On the subject of jets, from the Warbirds over Wanaka home page: "Come and join us in celebrating 75 years of the Royal New Zealand Airforce. See some jets from other airforces and compare them to our famous World War II Warbirds". Am I reading too much into this?

OK, so its really not that far away...(especially for those of us that HAVE to book leave well in advance ) do we have any confirmed rumours yet about the Ohakea show? I'd love to go, and show the kids where I was based etc, but would like it to be a real "once in a lifetime" that they'd remember for a long time!

OK, so its really not that far away...(especially for those of us that HAVE to book leave well in advance ) In my case, it was pointing it out to my brother (in Hawera) so he could book leave. So that's my accommodation and transport sorted!

I'm wondering if NZ will be considered 'uncommie' enough for the RAAF or USN to bring their Super Hornets across the Tasman or Pacific to celebrate the RNZAF's 75th? ;D

Well hopefully the RAAF will bring the Super Hornets across for it, as they really are worth seeing on display.
And they are noisier than the F-111 - which in my books is pretty cool! ;D

That would be brilliant if the Super Hornets did make it across.

That would be brilliant if the Super Hornets did make it across. Well, start writing letters to the ADF Chief of Air Force, ask him nicely to send Super Hornets, and they may just send a couple over.

I would much rather see the Hudson cross the Tasman for the anniversary shows than any jets to be honest.

Just my opinion. I think celebrating the RNZAF's history by flying representatives of its most important types would be far better then having foreign jets flexing their muscles and rubbing salt into the wounds that our Air Force has nothing of the sort these days.
Sure, seeing some cool modern jets would be ok, but I'd rather see NZ's own history being celebrated.
If the RAAF and USAF or USN are coming as rumoured, I really hope the RAF makes the effort to join in and I also hope that the RCAF has been invited as they were a huge part in the expansion of our Air Force in 1939-45, training all those aircrew members.

Maybe some SEA Air forces as well with their history with the RNZAF...particularly the RSAF?

I would much rather see the Hudson cross the Tasman for the anniversary shows than any jets to be honest. I totally agree with you Dave. I've seen the Ventura flying in Australia, but not the Hudson. So if the Hudson came to NZ, I'd definitely go to the big airshow. And if they made it a duo and brought their Ventura across as well, that would be a hugely bigger bonus than jet fighter types that had never served with the RNZAF. It IS after all the RNZAF's birthday.
