Maybe but the volcanoes in the Auckland volcanic zone are statistically overdue for an eruption too. Also someone pointed out (in ChCh Press a couple of years ago) that prior to the 1931 napier quake there was a similar series of quakes in the South Island.
But back to the thread; I made a comment elsewhere that I was concerned that the Air Transport Replacement Project and the Endeavour Replacement Project happening in the same time frame, may result in the pollies screaming poverty and we'll end up with a real balls up across both projects. Some one (not here) claimed that the budget for the Air Transport Replacement Project was $1.6 billion, but I can't find a source for that and I'm slowly working my way through some Cabinet Papers that I've accessed. The person that claimed it has also not provided a source as of yet. But if that is a rough figure, then you are looking at the NZG having to front up with around $2 billion for two defence purchases in a very similar time frame. So from 2015 we are looking at an election in 2017 and 2020, if the 2014 & 2017 elected govts serve their full terms. One cannot in reality see the same party occupying the treasury benches from2008 out to 2020+, because that would be five elections they'd have to win in a row.

With the latest updates to the C130, hopefully the 4th one should be out soon, how long do people think the current ones will last? An update on the last two to be upgraded would be nice.

Depends on the hours left on the airframes. From my understanding the LEP wasn't a full upgrade of the airframe and they certainly didn't replace the engines so I suppose that will be your limiting factors. If they'd zero timed the airframes and upgraded the engines and props to J standard then basically would've had new aircraft so could've got another 30 or so years out of them. IMHO that could have made the LEP worthwhile.

yes, agree there. 60 years of herk ops would be a decent party. so we just have to wait another 18 months to see what the pollies write up

Around or just slightly after 2020 there may be 26 second hand brand new never used A400M Grizzlys on the market as Spain have just decided to on sell 13 of the 27 that they have orderd and contracted for. There will also be the 13 that Germany will be doing the same for. The Spanish are also reducing their NH90 acquisitions from 45 to 22. www.defense-aerospace.com/article-view/release/146876/spain-approves-extra-%E2%82%AC877m-for-defense-but-cuts-major-programs.htmlSo there could be an opportunity for NZ to strike a good bargain. The last 13 spanish Grizzlys will be delivered in a very austere configuration without many of the mission systems to cut costs.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yes sounds like a cheap deal, but tI think they will maybe try for some package to save good money but get quite a bit for that. Still loving the A400 though. I might even go look for a model to build. Do they come in 1:48 scale

If there are enough of them being returned before being bought there is a chance that they will be sold cheap. I still think they will be a good buy and if cheap even better.

I have stated many times that the Air Transport Review is occuring now and will finish next year in time to inform the 2015 DWP. This assertion is based on the below excerpt of a 2012 letter I received from the Minister of Defence in February last year in response to some queries I had. Recently I emailed the Minister regarding some questions I had one of which was about the Air Transport review. Below is the reply I received. Having read that,I emailed back asking for some clarification with the below being part of my email. So if the Air Transport Replacement Project goes ahead after the 2015 DWP it's still dependent upon mundane minor things such as the 2014 election, and / or earthquakes and other natural hazards. This is the reply tothe clarification I requested. It arrived yesterday. So that's the word and ye ancient C130s will have to chug along somewhat longer.

So does that mean that come 2015 they start taking test drives and kicking types, not too far away, the number of options is pretty limited so that once you have determined your requirements, the next phase should be relatively easy depending on what the budget looks like, maybe new hardware by 2020 timeframe. 2015 will be the 50th anniversary of C130 ops won't it ?

An item that appeared this arvo on Australian Aviation. It seems that CAF RNZAF along with CAF RAAF and CAF RAF were taken for a fly in the A400M at RIAT. Has a nice piccy of all three of them standing on the ramp. Article says that the RNZAF has shown interest in the aircraft to replace its C130Hs. Unfortunately what the RNZAF wants and what the RNZAF gets can be two completely different stories.

Interesting photo in the latest air force news of the CAF in an A400m. Caption reads "During his recent visit to Europe CAF was given the chance, with other Air Force heads, to experience a flight in the A400M Atlas transport". Good news for the A400 fans!

And so they should be looking at all options, things will not happen in the next 5-10 years but something needs to be looked at now with a view to purchase then. How many of our Hercs are back up and running now? how long will it take for them all to be up and running and how much longer will the 757 be running for? Its going to be the same for the P3 fleet how much longer will they be flying for and are all of them back flying yet after their upgrades. Was hoping that the Herc was going to be at Tauranga again this year but it appears that it will not.
