It Trevor Mallard and Phil Goof had sorted the rights properly from the beginning instead of pandering, this would never have happened. Gee Dave, the whole thing has been great and as for Trev and Phil... the whole TV rights thing was done under the National lead government not Labour. When Maori TV bid in a closed tender process the make up of their bid was leaked to TVNZ who gained a commercial advantage at the expense of Maori TV who were adhering to the spirit of the whole process. As a result TVNZ tried to gain advantage and then tv3 went crying to government supported by TVNZ who didn't want to pay more than Maori TV (remember TVNZ now knew the contents of the Maori TV tender) and as a result the free to air rights got split up. Maori TV was shafted. In most countries free to air would be far more restricted than here.

It may not have happened... it is all only based on newspaper reports and we all know how ethical and accurate they are.
I doubt there is much substance to the story, - it is just another muck raking exercise.
I live and work in both countries and have yet to see any issue beyond banter and friendly rivalry. Perhaps I may need to get out and frequent some different pubs, the kind where abuse and brawling among patrons is commonplace anyway.

I'd say the minority are going over the top. I suspect that where there is smoke there is fire, but perhaps not to the extent made out in the article in question. Definitely not acceptable for Aussie visitors to be treated in this way, as a host country I'm sure the majority of NZers and rugby fans wish to make all feel welcome. Very brave of people near Eden Park to shout out abuse from the safety of their own home - not.
I think I mentioned at the time of the Ireland game that it was mostly about supporting the underdog. The AB's have not been done any favours by the Aussies losing but Ireland played to their strengths and the conditions suited them. Mr Cooper nearly gifted Ireland an intercept try with a Carlos Spencer-like move close to full time. No doubt they will do the business against the USA, no chance of an upset there but getting back to doing the basics well will be a priority.
Looking forward to Saturday's match against France.

Why are you lumping all of New Zealand into this? I for one wasn't involved at all.
It is always difficult to believe anything that Fox corporation reports, they are one of the worst scourges in the media world. The article never actually stipulated how many people had been allegedly spat on, the reporter wrote, "Australian fans complained of being spat on " so it could have been just two fans in an isolated incident and the overseas gutter press hacks have run with the ball.
If it is true that hundreds of fans were spat on then yes action needs to be taken but there's no way I would believe that to have occurred. New Zealand crowds are generally renowned for their good behaviour and sporting nature.

And the point in posting this here is? No forum members named in the article that I can see, therefore your post quite unnecessary. Unless, of course, you have evidence to the contrary? Errol

Errol Given that the title of this thread is " Rugby World Cup 2011 " I'd say Darren is perfectly fine posting it here . I do however think its total BS , and probabally involves a very isolated incident , IF it even happened . Lets face it , any visitors that dont support the host country , at any major sporting event , are likely to feel a little on edge - they are out numbered ! Its normal , doesnt mean the threats real !

I just read there was a fire at the stadium in the Japan vs Tonga game. Was it serious? Nope , scrub fire in an adjoining rugby club grounds . Could have been a bit alarming for those there , but little risk , or harm done . Apparently caused by a discarded cigarette. No major damage and no threat to the public. Interesting - just as we received the first 111 call, we could see the fire in the background of the tv coverage. 3 pumps responded as a precautionary measure and the Ops Centre in the ground were monitoring the fire via cctv. We received a hell of a lot of calls to it though,

On a lighter note, that Weet-bix advert that has been playing the last five or six months where the kids in the park have All Black numbers taped onto their shirt backs is quote ironic given the Engalnd team's black shirts that the numbers all peeled off of. I reckon Weet-bix could jump on that situation and create a very funny follow up advert out of it.

"She attributed the animosity to New Zealand's inferiority complex about Australia, which is both richer than its neighbour and has long enjoyed sporting ascendancy, including winning two Rugby World Cups to New Zealand's one."
Aussie conceitedness, not Kiwi inferiority. That comment doesn't help. Aussie rugby ascendency certainly does not apply to the Wallabies who have lost three quarters of their games to the AB's in the last hundred years, less so of late. Kangaroo's maybe, Wallabies no.
I'd say that article was designed to make things worse based on that dopey statement.
Lumpy, I've never felt isolated or on edge at any AB's match in Australia. There is always an endless sea of AB's jumpers in the crowd. :-)

I say let the best team won and let that be in good spirit no matter who it is. It looks bad if we are seen as bad sports. Some people need to remember the effort Australia made in the Christchurch earth quake. Enjoy the rugby. AB's picked a strong team for France. My pick is AB's by 20 points. Enjoy your weekend.

Raptor, I don't share your optimism. I'm betting a VERY close game, I'd like to be wrong tho. After last night I think its pretty obvious who the team to beat is. This is going to be a tough WE cup.
