Fokker D.VIII Replica ZK-FES was carrying out airshow practice during my visit to Hood, 7th January. Nice looking machine, with that distinctive rotary warble. Taxiing out In the air Worms eye view A burst of engine on the way back in At rest, mission completed

I'm looking forward to it! I prefer the metvuw forecast to the met service one.

I can't as I am working and my car can't drive longer than five minutes before overheating. Would love to see pics - I hope there is/are new aircraft for those attending.

Sounds like you need to find some transport with a big fan on the front!

Well, looks like the weather will be ok ( provided the nor-wester doesn't get up ), so I'm going to make the trek!

I won't be going.
I'm working late-shift all weekend (starting at 3:45pm and finishing sometime after 9pm).
Bit of a bummer; however as I live local I get the opportunity to attend plenty of TVAL airshows, so missing the occasional one due to work commitments is no big deal.
I'm on early shift when the next airshow is on in April (finishing about lunchtime), so I will definitely be at that one if the weather behaves itself. And I'm on a rostered four-day Friday-Saturday-Sunday-Monday long weekend off duty when the Remembrance airshow rolls around again in November, so I'll definitely be at that one.

Well, it's nice weather and the wind is more of a gentle breeze than anything else, so presumably everything will be GO at Hood.
Meanwhile, I've gotta bugger off to work in about 30 minutes.
ps....I vaguely thought I heard the sound of the Red Checkers about an hour ago. I wonder if they have come visiting Masterton?

Great day! yes we had the Checkers. Corsair and p40 flew early. Fokker D.VIII and newer Albatros D.Va displayed also. Normal other TVAL stuff, yay. Then, as the FB2, Bristols, SE5s and D.I.s were getting ready to land, it was announced that the wind had become steady enough for the RE8. Magic!

What did they do with the RE8, I didn't think it was flyable? My grandfather flew them in WWI so I'm quite interested in them.

I saw the Checkers as I was driving a train just south of Solway, enroute to Wellington. Two of them flew directly over the train as I crossed the Waingawa river. Good to hear it was a great day. Presumably there will be lots of photographs posted to this thread by the end of the weekend? ;D

I believe the RE.8 we all know and love with the "kewpie doll" on the side was a proof-of-concept static example, and the one that flew today is a new one.
Another triumph for TVAL!

Awesome photos thanks for posting them, did the two D.VIIIs fly together. no, Albatros D.Va's did but the formation was not close. Also, the star one (as opposed to cresent) did more conservative passes - higher than normal. Thete is a second D.VIII?
