Awesome pics kiwiduster, how were you able to be on base on the Sunday after the show, can you just drive in and they let you or did you need to pull some strings?
If I just show up to Whenuapai and ask if I can take some pics will I be shot or will they let me in?

Yes, they have that big fence and the guard house for a reason, it's to stop people just wandering on base and taking photos. To go onto any military base you need to hav good reason, such as you work there - or if you don't you need better reason and have applied for permisson through the Base Adjutant who will arrange you an escort. Usually just taking some photos is not a good enough reason by the way.

Why does the C-17 have 15th WG and 154th WG on it? Is it shared by two seperate Air Wings?

Heaven is a visitors pass!! Well it would be rude to decline an invitation wouldn't it? ;D Really enjoying the access all areas pics from the Sunday, I had a brief look over the fence in the morning on the way home but everything seemed to be still tucked up for the night. I also want to echo your other comment and say for myself it was a great day spent on the fence on the Friday, in excellent company with yourself and pilotpotters . You were obviously totally right about the green hornet being from 77. I confused myself by thinking the checks were 75 for some reason (when I know that 75 has diamonds...). Also the big orange struture we three were looking at is apparently a parachute washing and drying facility (that's what I was told when I asked anyway).

I thought it might be a bit like the way the A-4's were shared and so had both 2/75 markings, but I had a look and it seems thus: 15th WG is PACAF airlift 154th WG is Hawaii ANG and as such is a composite wing of both combat and support aircraft; the C-17 element presumably operating under the aegis of 15WG PACAF.

Great to see this thread still going strong. I posted a large folder of photos on my website last week covering the Hornets at Ohakea so quite a few photos there for anyone interested.

Thanks Gavin, awesome collection of Hornet shots on your website. I really like some of the angles you got, i.e. in one the a/c is taxing and there must be a bit of a ramp incline (and the 3 tanks on) which gives a really different ground perspective...and I do like how you seem to have caught Mac the solo pilot's pre-flight walk over the a/c.
