Warplanes complete mission TRACY NEAL Lost radio communication and a flaffing television cameraman almost stole the show in the skies over Nelson yesterday, but pilot Bill Reid managed to save the day. "Sorry to have kept everyone waiting for a while," the Nelson resident, owner and pilot of a classic British World War II Avro Anson warplane, said after yesterday's behind-schedule flyover in formation with two early communist-era Chinese Nanchangs. The cameraman on board had trouble with his camera before takeoff, then the radio went offline in Mr Reid's Anson, which delayed their approach into Nelson. "It was ‘finger trouble' on my part but we had nice friendly [air traffic] controllers on duty. "When we got to Wakefield I realised we were meant to have been over Motueka by that stage, and we couldn't come into the Nelson zone without the radio working, so we had to fly around a bit until I got it operating," Mr Reid said. The three classic warplanes flew a large circuit over the Nelson region as a forerunner to this weekend's Classic Fighters spectacle in Marlborough. The formation was spearheaded by Mr Reid in the 1936 Avro Anson and took off from Omaka in Marlborough, then headed to Nelson. "We had an awesome time and the weather was perfect. The aim was to expose the aircraft to as many people as possible to get support for the airshow . "With all the settlements we flew over, I'm guessing the best part of 120,000 people could have potentially looked up," Mr Reid said. Aviation rules prevented them flying directly over urban areas, which was why they had to stick to the outskirts of towns. Mr Reid said it was a long time to be flying in formation, which was not so bad for him in the front but it was strenuous for the two Nanchang pilots, Mark O'Sullivan and Jay McIntyre. Mr Reid's classic plane is the only airworthy-certified Avro Anson Mark 1 in the world. It was re-launched last year following a 10-year restoration. Pilot Dave Phillips, who helped Mr Reid during test flights last year, will be flying the aircraft at this weekend's show. The theme this year of the Classic Fighters show, widely regarded as a world-class airshow, is "The Yanks are coming" - in other words how the Americans went to war and the impact they had. New Zealand film-maker and classic plane collector Peter Jackson's world famous World War I Fokker triplanes will feature once more, with all seven expected. Marlborough diva Sarah Brown is working with local acts and the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band to create a complementary music programme. The band will perform 1940s-style big band hits including Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman numbers. Classic Fighters 2013 this Easter weekend, March 29-31, starting with a practice flying day this Friday that is also open to the public. Saturday and Sunday are the main show days. Online ticket sales end 5pm today. Further details visit classicfighters.co.nz www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news/8479027/Warplanes-complete-mission

I've got a bad feeling about photos now......went out for 20 minutes, got home and here's Teresa sitting with a camera.......not my camera (which has an issue) but a new camera. To be precise its a (reading off the manual) Canon Powershot SX50 HS which has 52X optical zoom! So jealous but worried about Teresa's candid shots! Be very afraid forum members, no one will be safe!

Hahaha....the “handbrake” is trying to show you up, Baz.
Oh well, I'll be there with three Canon SLR bodies and a selection of lenses.
And if you think I'm bad, wait until you see what is in my brother's HUGE camera bag (he's over from Brisbane for the airshow....his first Classic Fighters, although he went to most of the Warbirds Over Wanaka airshows during the 1990s).
Anyway, the following article (published by The Southland Times after Warbirds Over Wanaka 2008) kinda says it all about the inhabitants of the back row of the gold-pass grandstand at Warbirds Over Wanaka, Wings Over Wairarapa and Classic Fighters....• Time of their lives for the fanatic few

Hi guys...safe travels all. I am heading up today in a campervan doing my best to slow all the traffic down and annoy those on the road!! No actually I am the person who will keep pulling over so I DONT do that!!
Oh unless it is a red Mondeo wagon....heheh Baz. Reminds me of an American movie from the 70's where a big truck tormented a guy in his normal car...wish I could remember what it was called. Ooooh....didn't it end bad for the truck driver??
Baz, probably cant make it tonight as I am heading over to the JEM hangar on arrival to drop some parts off and Belynda has tea organised.
See you all there
Cheers Anthony

I wonder if i need ear defenders..............not for the aircraft but the sounds of thousands of camera shutters going off! Last post for now. Teresa is bringing her laptop so we can check out the photos and answer any questions anyone might pose. Just off to attach a Sidewinder to the roof of the Mondeo. The seeker head has been calibrated for camper vans.................keep an eye out in that rear view mirror Anthony................... ;D
