STUNNING photographs all! I can't add much more than that!
Very interesting to see the DH4 as there has been much talk recently at Key and WIX about surviving examples and replicas.

Another of mine I rather like. I call it "British Heritage..." and don't you just love this propeller...

Another of mine I rather like. I call it "British Heritage..." and don't you just love this propeller... Brent Thompson (I think I got his name right) makes beautiful wooden props at Rangiora that look like that, wonder if its one of his? Both Anthony and I am getting props from him, mine brand new and a repair job on Anthony's.) They have a lot of character don't they?

Did anyone else see the amzaing air display that the black sun umbrella did on the Sunday? It was soaring in an updraft above the gold pass area and was flying inverted, very skilful display, almost like a ballet. It had many of us chuckling. Yes! It followed in loose formation (balbo?) with this one that hovered over the boundary fence having flown a Vertol from the unsuspecting spectators. Dust-devil from the extreme heat and variable breezes of the afternoon.

Ummmmm....different umbrella.
The one I saw taking an aerial tiki-tour was black.
In fact, I don't recall any umbrellas in the Gold Pass enclosure that weren't black.
It must have come from somewhere else.

Read my post more carefully KTJ, I watched both of them in "loose formation"( take that liberally), perhaps more echelon port (or is it starboard, or perhaps line astern, how the hell can you tell with a circle?) about 30m away. :-)

Yes the one I saw was black on the Sunday. Someone nearby me said that one had done the same display the day before too. So becoming a popular display by the looks of it. ;D
On the Friday I was near the jet park and there were lots of people on the fenceline near me. A huge gust of wind hit us and I turned to see at least ten people running off after their hats, all stooped in the run, as their hats rolled along rapidly just out of reach. it looked like a formation ritual dance and was very funny, i really wish I'd caught it on camera.

Here is a photo of the umbrella in question. It became airborne shortly after the 757 flypast.

I remember seeing a similar thing at Wanaka in 2008. I was in one of the bank corporate areas when the Aussie C-17 did a low speed fully configured flypast. Several of the large sun umbrellas along the fenceline lifted out of the tables they were shading and followed in the direction of the C-17. Clearly some very confused air was generated by the big machine as it flew past. By the way, congratulations to all involved with the airshow. I was working out of NZ over the weekend and relied on the great photos that have been posted here and elsewhere. That Mosquito is really going to be missed

Some of the VIP guests were topdressing veterans rather than Mossie vets, so maybe some of the older chaps I don't recognise are topdressers?

On another note, I've just read from somebody's blog, that the paint scheme for NZ3009, is not an AVG one, but that of "Chinese fighter ace Xu Hua Jiang. who was one of the 2 most famous aces in the Nationalist Chinese Air Force in WW 2. This aircraft 88/663/P-11151 was one of 27 P 40E's delivered to China in early 1943. It has an inscription in Chinese characters on the nose which is "Tai Gong Lin" which translates as ""By order of a respected senior person". This phrase goes back in Chinese history to a famous Prime Minister in the Zhou Dynasty (1050 to 256 BC)."
Like most others, I thought it was "just another bloody AVG sharkmouth scheme", but, knowing the history behind it, whilst I'd still like to see it in RNZAF colours, I dont feel quite so rabid, now...

Thanks for sharing that Jon, that is really very interesting indeed. I was not aware of it.
I did actually hear to seperate members of the public at last weekend's show point to it and say it was wearing Chinese Nationalist markings, it surprised me that people were aware of it as most don't even seem to recognise RNZAF wartime markings.
