Some of the "real gold" happens in situations like this when warbirds/historics happen in on small town airfields enroute to a gig. Case in point the CAF Zero refuelling at Ashburton when it was brought out here by Warbirds Over Wanaka. Can be quite surreal, . . . . And bloody good fun !

Case in point the CAF Zero refuelling at Ashburton when it was brought out here by Warbirds Over Wanaka. Can be quite surreal, . . . . And bloody good fun ! Or Tim Wallis calling in to Gisborne to refuel his new Spitfire enroute from Auckland where it had been displayed by Stephen Gray (I cannot recall whether it was at Ardmore or Whenuapai) enroute to Wanaka. I knew the air traffic controller who was on duty that day and he phoned me at home with a heads-up while Tim was still enroute to Gisborne. I was out the airport like a shot after first phoning a few mates. The bush telegraph must have gone into overdrive, because by the time Tim turned up with the Spitfire there was quite a crowd gathered at Gizzy Airport. After refuelling, Tim took off and put on an impromptu flying display before heading south. Unfortunately, he had that fuel incident overhead Waipukurau on the way, resulting in the Spitfire getting bent.

It was Ardmore, and Stephen Grey, not Gray.

I wonder if there are any photos of the Mossies there in 1947 too?
Wartime and postwar Mossie Navigator Mac Morgan told me, "I was the Navigation Leader of the Mosquito formation (4 aircraft) attending the Air Pageant at Masterton on 8th November 1947."
Not the converted flatbed ute Jeep!

I'm fairly certain Mac Morgan was the NZ Air Attache in London when I signed on with the RNZAF in late 1962, and he was also at Mildenhall to farewell us in January 1963! Lovely guy!

BTW....there is a full-page Insight feature about the upcoming airshow next weekend published in today's Dominion Post newspaper, with one of Gavin's magnificent photographs of the Mosquito taking prominent place right across the full width of the top of the page.

Morris Oxford or Ford Consul? Oh you mean the plane. It looks like an Oxford. Funnnnnny. ;D I see all the RNZAF Consuls were actually converted Oxfords (NZ1901-1906). Photos show a silver overall paint scheme so thought this might be one of them.
