75 Sqn did a 9-ship loop over Ohakea in 1991 to celebrate the unit's 75th anniversay. A good point, I had forgotten that. No. 14 Squadron planned to do a 12-ship entire squadron loop while flying the Vampire Mk 9's at Nicosia, Cyprus, but the RAF banned such a loop because another squdron tried it just before and had a collision at the top of the loop. So the rule came down that only four-ship loops. So No. 14 Squadron did the 12-ship loop in three simultaneous loops of four.

Thread drift.
Radio signals are used more often to increase syncronization (no delay as the order is relayed) so things look more precise and is usually for airshow only with calls for smoke, gear etc etc etc. Radio silence is the norm and often preferred, there is a saying that is often thrown around that goes along the lines of;
The only three things a wingman should ever say are: 1. Two's up. 2. Lead, you're on fire. 3. I'll take the fat chick (sorry, very un-PC) A manoeuvre such as a bomb burst would require some radio work as it is a manoeuvre where the pilots are not in sight with each other, as is the case in quite a few displays.
It would be also relevant in situations using aircraft that would not allow viewing of hand signals.
I'm sure some of the ex Mil guys on the forum will chime in here as well, Andrew H where you at?
Hand signals are military and becoming more formalised in recent years in civilian flying with the introduction of FAST formation training which is a recognised worldwide standardisation of practices, signals etc.

Damn damn damn bugga sh!t... no annual trip to WOW for me after my ride has (unbelievably) got a funeral in Masterton on Saturday and will need to carry family down... instead of our usual Fri nite to Taupo, early start to MS and return to TPO on the same day. Oh well... I will see if I can justify a solo car trip and make a weekend out of it instead.

It's good to see Wings Over Wairarapa being heavily promoted on all of the Wellington trains. Every carriage on the network has a Wings Over Wairarapa poster on display. Tranz Metro are one of the airshow sponsors.

I also note [because I get their e-mails] that the Historic Aircraft [HAFU] film guys are doing a DVD of the show and it is already on sale...pre-ordered that is! Card won't be charged until it is posted to you!

A reasonably balanced discussion... with a touch of journo childness. Yes - the photographer could have done better but it was all about the machine I guess... Unfortunately a bad firmware update smacked my "good" Droidworx machine 3 days before the interview. I guess the diy attitude came through more though.

If you're coming from the north (but, west of the ranges) it's quicker if you avoid the Manawatu Gorge and instead go over the Pahiatua Track from Palmerston North. However, don't go right into Pahiatua, but instead turn right onto Nikau Road just past Makomako and follow that for a few kilometres through Nikau, then at Marima, turn left into Tutaekara Road and head out through Mangamaire to SH2, then travel south to Masterton.
This way is much quicker, but if you have an 15 minutes go via the Manawatu Gorge for the scenic route - You can see just how big the slip was that had the gorge closed for atheyear - Go past the Tui Brewery - Visit the Harvard slide in Pahiatua. If you just want to quickly visit the Harvard on the way in, if your going over the Pahiatua track go all the way to Pahiatua and turn left towards Woodville - you'll see it just before Pahiatua finishes When your done playing head out of Pahiatua turn back around and head south I've just got a one day ticket and i'm currently planning to be at the airshow on Sunday unless the weather looks markedly better for Saturday

Saturday 13:00 is now showing fine with a 15kt WNW wind but then overnight rain before a fine Sunday with variable 5kt winds mainly northerly. Lets hope it only rains at night!!
In fact Friday is mainly overcast through the day with a variable southerly breeze which may have light passing showers, but becoming clear for the evening show!!

I have it on very good authority that the weather will be fine on both Friday and Saturdays. If it isn't I will; return my seaweed!
