That smoke trail reminded me of an early Qantas 707-138 powered by water-injected turbojets that I saw takeoff from Christchurch when I was a young fella. It left a dirty black trail that hung around for ages after it departed. And the noise was excrutiatingly loud! They weren't any quieter when I saw an RAAF one at Richmond in 2006.

That would have been a 707-338C powered by Pratt & Whitney JT3D turbofan engines.
The earlier 707-138 was powered by P&W JT3C turbojet engines with water injection for takeoff thrust. That's what caused the black smoke and excrutiatingly loud screaming noise.

Looks like I'll be going after all, trying to find vintage things among the grey pointy junk, while walking and walking and walking... For those in the area for a few days, the RAAF Museum will be open the usual days (Tues - Fri, 10-3, Sat & Sun 10 - 5) and Monday 4th March from 10-3. If you are driving to Avalon from Melbourne, you drive past the Point Cook exit on the highway, so it's not much of a diversion. On the other side of the highway is the B-24 Liberator restoration crew at Werribee, also well worth a look. www.airforce.gov.au/raafmuseum/b24australia.org.au/home.htmlBoth organisations will have a presence at the airshow as well. If I get time, I'll put up a 'aviation things to do in Victoria' list for those coming from out of state or overseas. Regards,

We arrive in Melbourne AM Thursday 28th, if anyone is around for a beer o'clock catchup Thursday! That is Mumbles and Myself. Leave a message at reception and I'll get back to you.
We're attending both Friday afternoon and Saturday, by V-line, and staying at the Rendezvous on Flinders.

Ditto Phil, Friday arvo & Saturday, going out by V-Line. $19.50 return, saves a lot of hassle.

Does anyone know why the RNZAF B757 isn't flying at Avalon?

I assume it must be operational needs elsewhere that have come up.

Friday's good for the dusk and night show, which is best with the Connie and the dump and bur... mmm.
Earlier on the day it's all a bit vague, unless you're there for the static (which isn't in the league the advertising would like to suggest) or to collect freebees from the exhibitors.
Weather depending, Sat is likely to be the better show day, and potentially easier to get out...
For those that haven't been before, wear good footwear, and be prepared to walk a lot, some on hefty gravel. It's a bigger venue than most, and stuff is well spread out these days.
Regards,

DUmp and burrrr.... sigh, never got to see that.
Also pack sunscreen and water. :-) Last airshow in melb that time of years 40 degrees IIRC. Point Cook, 2012. +1 on the footwear, hiking boots are usually a good way to go IMHO. Jandals, not so much.
The Solomons, Dave?

Indications are that we may see a USMC CV-22 Osprey at Avalon this year; "A cross-section of U.S. military aircraft and equipment are scheduled to be present through static displays and aerial demonstrations including the USAF F-22 Raptor, C-17 Globemaster III, F-16 Fighting Falcon, B-52 Stratofortress, and KC-135 Stratotanker, and a U.S. Marine CV-22." see www.pacaf.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123337069That would be very cool!
