Spectacular images from classic airshow in New Zealand show vintage planes being taken to their limits... and one being blown to bits when its brakes failed.... more read here.......... English media get more over excited than its Kiwi countrparts. The Daily Fail demonstrating it's usual standards of research and fact checking lol Off topic, but a good read as to how the Mail online and other tabloids function: tktk.gawker.com/my-year-ripping-off-the-web-with-the-daily-mail-online-1689453286

Okay I give up. I'm posting nice sharp images to PB and Flickr but they are being downgraded when shared here. Anyone else had this problem? Look sharp and clear on my PC.

Wow. I don't know what i can add really. This show just seems to get better and better. Thoroughly enjoyed it from the twilight show (loved the music, it certainly was NOT a "din") right through to the grand finale. It was a shame the forum meet didn't go quite to plan (I think the MAC bar was too attractive)but the Auster club people enjoyed themselves and I noticed Dave was in record mode for the talks given by some of them, including an ex Air Force mechanic who had to repair an Air Force Auster. As far as personal Auster highlights, the sight of four lined up by the AHC, seeing Andrew Vincent take part in the twilight show in his MK5C (don't think there will be any photos as it was getting pretty dark!) and catching up with other rebuilders and owners including Craig Sampson, a Kiwi(ex-RNZAF) living in the US and has the only flying Auster over there.) I agree with Dave that this show must be the best I've seen and at least on a par with the Mosquito show for watching something fly that has not been seen in NZ skies for a long long time. Teresa was the "official" photographer for us so will be posting photos over the next few days. We are pretty tired having driven to Nelson yesterday morning to look at a couple of Auster projects (and a very pretty recently rebuilt Cessna 170) and a BBQ. We then left Nelson just after 4pm and drove non stop through the Lewis pass to Christchurch non-stop. Got home just before 9pm. Well done Classic Fighters Team. Not sure how you are going to top this one!!

It's the Daily Mail - I'm not going to give them hits! I was very relieved to hear Frank was ok, those who saw it told me there was a worrying minute or so where there was no movement from the aircraft, but he soon emerged. He went on to fly Currawong on both show days, and every time I saw him around the field he was cheerful, so that's nice. I watched him preflight around 11: Restoration Row was excellent this year, but I didn't actually take photos of most of the projects! Sorry! It was great to see the two Fairchild 24 fuselages side by side - Trevor Collins' ZK-ABE is gorgeous and looks nearly complete and the work on Graham Orphan's one is beautiful. The Comper Swift was there too with one wing out and the other folded, it is a tiny wee thing! Also the former Marlborough Aero Club Waco was there, I can't wait to see that fly (how long since there have been two Wacos on a New Zealand airfield??). Also present was the Chariots of Fire Fighter Collection Fokker E.V which looks nice but has a way to go. You can see the Waco and the Collins Fairchild in the left background of this shot of the lovely Moth ZK-ADT: And it's not a restoration project but it is absolutely pristine - and for sale - the resident Hiller UH12 ZK-HAB: Something I noticed on Sunday was the sound of gunfire coming from the Camel and the Mohnicke(sp?) triplane! That was new to me, and really added to the experience. I hope more of the TVAL aircraft get a similar treatment, though I can't say what exactly it was making the sound. And now some of my own photos from around the show, in no particular order. Definitely not something you see at many other aeroclubs around the country. NH799's rego plate is the same today as when I first saw it in the Warbirds Over Wanaka '94 book as a Spit-mad eight-year-old: A gorgeous background for the forum meet and Auster stories, Gert's beautiful Bleriot which ran two or three times. Unfortunately it didn't fly but he was given one of the fine trophies on Sunday night for his efforts. Well earned! The NZDF joint forces display was spectacular, including suppressive fire from the UH-1. They will be missed. It was my first time seeing Cam and Tracey Hawley's delightful Beech C17, and I fell in love. Even the prop is polished! This is them (at left) cleaning the machine after a practice run on Friday. They also received a well-deserved trophy at the awards dinner. More to come when my phone and Photobucket match up with what they're doing.

Great photos Zac. Yes before the big Bristol engine swap Al was going to run his engine at the Forum meet. However it was neat to see Gert's 1920s(?) radial powered Bleriot running (cool blue flames out the cylinder ports! too).

The UK Daily Mail report on the show is so misinformed and badly written it is a complete farce. It came out of Australia, from a very junior reporter it would seem, and apart from bad English and totally incorrect photo captions, it attributes the Marlborough Express with comments it never made! I note that at least two forum members have provided corrections to the DM, not that it will take note!

What a great show! I do need my recovery day off work, however. Thanks to all involved. Great catching up with various forumites. If anyone managed to take photos of the Austers at the Meet, I failed to get any before the light faded, and I'm sure the participants would like some. When we got back to Ardmore in the DC-3, NH799 was parked up at AvSpecs for finishing (I'm told the instrumentation is incomplete, for instance?) Great to see Kermit Weeks back again and also John Romain. I had a chance to talk to Kermit Weeks in 2011 and he was very easy to talk to and very enthusiastic about the show. Would be interesting to hear the comments from these two gentlemen on the show as a whole.
The Spitfire XIV was for many years registered to my home address - unfortunately I didn't own it.

I met Kermit at a book signing a few years ago at Oshkosh...really good guy. His Facebook page is well worth a look. He recently put pictures up of his Tempest which looked amazing. Quite often he makes a short "Kermie Cam" video of one of his aeroplanes.....I am always hinting that he needs to do a Sunderland one! He basically owns his own air force of aeroplanes with some kind of NZ back ground.

Went Sunday, my son and I loved the whole show. First time I have seen a Griffon spit and she looked and sounded lovely. Congrats to the team for coming up with some innovation (eg: V1) as usual and they set the airshow standard for NZ IMHO.
Only thing that concerned me was the two Yaks flying directly over the crowd and at very low level. They flew over our heads and we were a fair way in from the display line. That sort of thing isnt meant to happen.

Would be interesting to hear the comments from these two gentlemen on the show as a whole. I didn't muster the guts to chat to John Romain but I did with Kermit! He gushed about Omaka and said he was really happy to be back, he had a lot of good things to say about it. An addendum to my photo post above: The syndicate-owned Yak-11 being restored as a Yak-9V was towed over to Restoration Row on Saturday morning and was the subject of much interest from the public. This is a great initiative and I am very excited to see it come to fruition. We have three airworthy Spitfires, the prospect of three airworthy inline Yaks....who's going to give us a third P-40?

great weekend in Omaka... I am amazed at how many people involved with warbirds have an Auster story or two to share. Joe Public may not be aware of the mighty Steel Aeroplane but there are a few taildragger pilots who are well acquainted with the brakes - or lack thereof... There were several highs & lows for me, the low would have to be coming back to my seat & seeing a very bent Focke Wulf on the field. High - seeing a formation of 3 Spitfires overhead I suggested we get some pics of all the Auster folk & also the forum members who quite possibly felt outnumbered. Although some of us Auster folk are Forum as well - it could have been a great opportunity to snare a few new WONZ members. i1258.photobucket.com/albums/ii523/TMTod/Omaka%202015/IMG_5290_zpscciy5lsk.jpg

Was anyone else concerned about the V-1 launch ramp being on the active airfield, especially when aircraft started using the East-West cross runway, which put the aircraft very close to it? On Sunday during the Harvard's take-off for the mock attack one of them came very close to it. It had to pull up and turn sharply to the right to avoid it. The V-1 launch crew even made a run for it! After what happened to the FW-190 I thought leaving a big lump of steel out there was a bit silly.

The V-1 launch ramp was set up well within the pyro area and outside of the active runway. Still the second Harvard did swing to the left on take off and it was prudent to run!

I thought the V1 was very underpowered without any get out of jail power, not to mention the wings flappin like a bird, a little over hyped I think, oh well, joe public seemed to like it.
what I did think was great and not seen for many years, a display by the devon, quite a pretty aircraft in the air.
