This 2015-2016 season The Vintage Aviator will be hosting ‘Flying Weekends’ at Hood Aerodrome in Masterson. It will take place the last Saturday and Sunday of every month from November to April.
This particular one is Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of April 2016, covering ANZAC Weekend.
The flying weekends are casual so make sure to bring your own seat and refreshments. Tickets are sold $20 for adults and $10 for children. Flying will be scheduled from 10.00am – 12.00pm and 2.00pm to 4.00pm Saturday and Sunday, with a Saturday only option of 6.00pm – 8.00pm if flying that day has been held up with weather. Hangar tours will also be offered outside of flying hours. The guided tours will be $15 for adults and $10 for children.

I certainly won't be going to the ANZAC show as I'm getting married that Saturday. But I'll make up for it by going to as many others as I can manage!

Wellington Model Expo is on the same weekend (but Saturday/Sunday as opposed to Sunday/Monday for the TVAL show). I expect Wingnut Wings will have a stand and in the past they have unveiled some new releases there. The Expo runs every two years or thereabouts. At the last show WNW released the two Roland CII kits, the one before that the Pfalz D.XII (if I recall correctly).

I'll be in Wellington for ANZAC weekend and I'd like to try to get up to Masterton, weather (especially wind) permitting. I did the same trip way back in 2009. Anyone have any tips for the train journey, apart from the fact that it seems to have been replaced by a bus service for that weekend! I note the TVAL website says the flying is 23rd and 24th April rather than the Sunday and Monday noted in Dave's post thevintageaviator.co.nz/airshows/flying-weekends . I've emailed to see if I can get some clarification.

I'm rostered for late-shit on Anzac weekend, although I pulled the good-old Holidays Act trick of demanding my public holiday off (while being paid for 8 hours), so my plans were to attend the TVAL flying weekend on the Sunday until I had to bail early afternoon to go to work, then on ANZAC day, driving over to Petone early in the morning to attend the Railway Anzac Service at the ANZAC Flagstaff at Petone Railway Station, before heading back to Masterton and maybe missing out the first part of the flying day at Hood. However, KiwiRail has decided (bless 'em) to shut-down the Wairarapa line for some serious track work over Waitangi weekend and as a result Tranz Metro are only running the early train from Masterton to Wellington on Saturday morning, then replacing all trains with buses until Monday evening when they will run a train from Wellington to Masterton. So that gives me all of Saturday and Sunday off, and as I'd already pulled the Holiday Act trick for the Monday, I've got all of that day off too. And, it now appears that TVAL are holding their flying weekend over the Saturday and Sunday. So I'll be there both days (Saturday and Sunday) and then I'll be able to attend the Railway ANZAC service at Petone without having to rush back to Wairarapa. As a matter of interest, the first ANZAC service at Petone Railway Station was held on ANZAC Day 1916, so it is the centennial this year. The original ANZAC flagstaff is still there too, although it is a flagpole these days, because the crossarms were removed many years ago because they were over-stressing the main flagpole. from Hutt News....Early Anzac service to be commemorated at Petone railway stationA service at Petone railway station will remember the war sacrifices of railwaymen on both sides of the Tasman.9:46AM - Thursday, 18 February 2016An Australian red ensign is unfurled on Anzac Day, 2016, at the Petone Railway station. A New Zealand ensign was flown in NSW, Australia, on the same day. The flagpoles at Petone and Hornsby were established by NZ and Australian railwaymen to mark rail workers killed in WWI. — Ref: 191606504, Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries.KIWIRAIL and a group of history and rail enthusiasts are preparing to mark the centenary of one of the first Anzac Day services held in New Zealand — at Petone railway station.
A dawn service, beginning at 7am, will be held at the Petone station on Anzac Day, April 25th, 100 years to the day since the first Anzac service was held there.
As part of the commemoration Hutt News is running a competition where winners and their families will receive free rides on the Passchendaele Express steam train, and a $500 travel voucher for the Interislander ferry.
On the first anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, April 25th, 1916, a commemorative flagpole made from kauri and Australian hardwood — symbolising “the unity of Australian and New Zealand railway men in peace and war” — was unveiled outside the Petone railway station. A similar event took place in Hornsby, NSW, Australia.
By this time it was said that up to 2,000 New Zealand Railways employees had enlisted in World War I, and at least 37 had died.
Prominent among them was Major Norman Fredereick Hastings, a 36-year-old fitter and foreman at the Petone workshops who assumed command of the 6th (Manawatu) Squadron of the Wellington Mounted Rifles Regiment during the August offensive at Gallipoli. He died of wounds received on August 9th, 1915 during the battle for Chunuk Bair.
It is believed his death was a primary motivation for the erection of the Petone memorial.
“On Anzac Day this year, it won't be the New Zealand flag that will be hauled up the tall kauri and jarrah pole but an Australian red ensign,” Petone Community Board member and history enthusiast Gerald Davidson said.
“It is a tradition that goes back to the very first Anzac Day memorial held there in 1916 following a suggestion in 1915 that Australian and New Zealand railwaymen should fly each other's flags to signify their comradeship at Gallipoli.”
Dignitaries are expected to attend this year's commemoration but the original service was a community event and Davidson said organisers wanted locals to come.
A bonus is the chance to view and enjoy a ride to Taita on the Passchendaele Express steam train ($5, with proceeds going to a charity). The steam locomotive Passchendaele will be giving rides between Petone and Taita on Anzac Day this year. — Photo: Mark Taylor.BE IN TO WINAnzac Day is a time of reflection and remembrance, and that is reflected in the topic of our essay competition.
For a chance to win a family pass for a ride on the Passchendaele Express steam train, and a $500 travel voucher for the Interislander ferry, readers are being challenged to write no more than 500 words on the topic:
“This Anzac Day KiwiRail is remembering all the railway men and woman who helped in WW1. Who do you remember on Anzac Day?”
Email your entry by April 4th to (with ‘Petone Railway’ in the subject line) and include your name, the suburb you live in, phone number/s and your age group — group 5-10 years, 10-15 years, 15 years or over.
The steam locomotive Ab608, built in 1915, has carried the Passchendaele nameplate since 1925, when the then Minister of Railways, Gordon Coates, approved a plan to remember railwaymen killed in The Great War. By the time it was withdrawn from service in 1967, Ab 608 had steamed more than 2.4 million kilometres. The locomotive has since been restored to full working order by Steam Incorporated at Paekākāriki.www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/77014985

Thanks for the kind offer Errol, but as I'll be with my girlfriend it is best we have independence of action when it comes to deciding when to leave, even if it is on the bus. I can heartily recommend the Pop-up Globe. We saw Romeo and Juliette there the other day, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Just be careful where you sit. Apparently the ticket plan on the sales website does not exactly match what they built.

Bugger....the weather forecast doesn't look the best for the weekend.
However, fingers crossed....the forecasters don't always get it right.

It's a perfect day in Wairarapa for flying WWI aeroplanes.
Clear skies, sunshine and no wind.
Let's hope the weather stays this way.

That's great to hear. We're in Wellington right now and given the bus for train situation and the iffy weather we were thinking of flagging it if we didn't have a good chance of seeing some flying. Thanks heaps of the update, and do your best to convince the weather gods to have it stay that way.

If the weather is okay tomorrow, Gene is planning to fly the black FE.2b; and that came right out of the horse's mouth.
Today began with the DH5 doing a “weather flight” followed by the usual DH.82a cutting up a toilet roll.
Then, the two Fokker D.VIII razorbacks flew and got into a turning dogfight with a S.E.5a.
An Albatros D.Va put on a handling display and that was followed by a low and extremely tight formation of two S.E.5a, the Sopwith Triplane and the DH.5 putting on an extended display.
The weather was rather threatening, so they eventually called it a day until tomorrow, but it was a very enjoyable outing today. Lots more aeroplanes out on the flight-line too. Gene was hoping to do a couple of fly-pasts with the LVG today but weather conditions weren't quite right, so he has it on the “to-do” list tomorrow if the weather is suitable.
And I forgot....Bevan put on an aerobatic display in the Chipmunk today as well.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow's weather....I'm the eternal optimist when it comes to TVAL flying days.
ps....there was a food vendor there today (in spite of what TVAL's website says) and they will be there again tomorrow.
Although I didn't try one, the boys tell me the beef toasted sandwiches are to-die-for.
And with that, I've gotta get changed and head down the road and around the corner to the Irish pub. A few of the lads are getting together for some beers and a feed. I've only got to walk for about five minuts to get there, so no worries about getting home again after I've had a few....the joys of living right on the edge of the down-town area.

A jolly fine day out. Putting the 2 hours on the bus each way aside, pretty much the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Those ancient inline engines sound so good purring around the sky. And what a treat to be able wander freely around a hangar full of literally priceless treasures, none of which are corralled behind barriers.
Bonus: a nice chat with KTJ on the crowd line.

It pissed down during the wee hours of this morning (the rain woke me up), but now it is a very still, grey drizzly day. However, the forecast is for it to clear up throughout the morning, so fingers crossed for some great flying later. I'll head out to Hood as soon as I see signs of the weather clearing. In the meantime, here are some photographs of that beautiful formation display of two S.E.5a, the Sopwith Triplane and the DH.5 yesterday afternoon....
