Man that's a shame, fortunately being a naval aircraft she is a tough old bird but sadly she will rot away if nothing is done! Most may have seen these of mine taken in 1981 of NZ2504. I'll try and dig out some of the restoration photos too. And this one is interesting as there are two different forum members running her: top is tbf2504 (Paul Harrison) and the middle is one me running her for the first time aged 17! Lower shot is her second restoration into "NZ2521" and shows the big hole after removing the sheet metal over the turret position (and the big steel plate with big lead weights bolted to it for weight and balance).

More Avenger nose art, but what is it, where is it, and what aircraft? I've not seen any nose art such as this one mentioned before. and a close up scan. Sorry about the quality, but the original was pretty nasty! (via Damon Edwards. Cheers, Pete M.

Hmm, quite a big artwork. I'm also trying to work out the location. Woodbourne? Wigram?

When (and where) did NZ2504 get the name "The Lone Avenger"? I have pics of her at Wigram with the name but I wonder if it was applies at Te Rapa or earlier.

2504 was on my inventory when at Te Rapa, She was all silver when I arrived and I repainted the black and yellow stripes on her. Unfortunately I was posted to Woodbourne before I got the underwing serials repainted. The markings were traceable under the silver and that is what I used as a guide. SDhe did not have the "Lone Avenger" title at that period

Yep the two side cowlings are removed. The lower object above the exhaust stack is the port oil cooler. I can just make out a turret so wonder which one it is?

Hi Dave. Duh, one sees what one would like to see!!! Re-looking at it again it now makes sense. I did wonder that any such nose art has never been mentioned. Cheers, Pete M.

No worries Pete, it was Kerry that twigged to it first.
Peter those topdressing photos are great. I wonder why the RAF, USAAF and US Ambassador's interest was.

On a more serious note: (I've posted these before, but thought I'd ressurrect them for this thread) A 15 year old me on paint-stripping duty. A few more of the paint-striipping 'gang' Paul Harrison doing his engine run. All finished and out for the first roll out. A 17 year old me cleaning the oil of 'The Lone Avenger' after its first engine run.

Everyone looks so young in those Wigram photos. Have to laugh at the paint stripping of then compared to now. At least you looked ready for action.
The modern stripper is Peroxide/Alcohol based. Not hazardous and environmentally friendly.

RE reply # 6, "when did 2504 receive the cowling name, "The Lone Avenger"? This at Ohakea when the aircraft on charge with # 42 Squadron. NZ 2527 was withdrawn from service early 1959 so Zero Four became the lone Avenger. I have a photograph of the lettering which appears twice on the LHS. Am unsure whether there was a repeat RHS. So reasonable to assume the name applied early-ish 1959.

Thanks for confirming that about the Lone Avenger name. So it seems to have had it in service, then it disappeared at or before Te Rapa, and then was it back on it at Wigram?
