Showing my age, but I have fond memories of USAF F-15's and F-16's dog-fighting over Whenuapai (sort of). Never seen a USAF display in this country though. Still got my fingers crossed for a b-52 or B-1, or maybe even F-22/F-35?

Who'd have guessed we'd see F-16s at Ohakea? ;-)

Cool stuff! Looks like the USAF Pacific contribution, any additional US assets likely from other commands i.e. CONUS-based, or Navy/Marine (who have more deployable F-35s).

My comment was tongue-in-cheek and perhaps should have gone on to say "after 2002".

While watching pairs of F-15s taking off each morning from my back door 800m from and on the centreline of runway 21 at Whenuapai was great, and seeing a F-111 whiz past at low level with a F-16 on it's tail was fantastic, I wouldn't call it a display :-)

I'd suggest you have a better chance of seeing those types if you book your ticket to Avalon in March the Vipers are a cool addition to the line up, I recall watching a sizeable air battle over OH during TRIAD back in '84 & have always been an F-16 fan ever since

Avalon is a distinct possibility. :-)
I wagged school one day and got to Whenuapai just in time to watch F-16's come hauling over the Waitakere's and make a bomb run, once the F-15's took after them, the sneaky aussies came in at treetop level right above us to finish the job. Ah, the good old days.

Planning on sitting on my deck and watching the entire thing for free! 😊

I just found out that if you are planning on using the park and ride option to get to the airshow then you need a ticket for each person travelling each day (i.e. a Saturday ticket won't get you a ride on Sunday as well). This is in addition to the airshow admission ticket. The tickets are free but you will need one to park your car at the park and ride locations (Manfeild in Feilding and Bulls) and to travel on the bus to/from Ohakea. Get them from the Air Tattoo Ticketek web site: premier.ticketek.co.nz/shows/show.aspx?sh=AIRPKRDE17&v=MTU&p=EMER2017657AIf you are planning on taking your car to Ohakea the official car park is $15 per car (this is on top of/in addition to the airshow admission price/ticket). Again you need to pre-book this through Ticketek, but apparently the tickets are being sent out by the Air Force in early Feb. The communications about the park and ride and car parking options is making me nervous. They seem to be making it up as they go. I have opted for the park and ride as that is what they are saying will be the best way to get to the show and that there will be no car parking at the show apart from the limited prebooked official tickets. What worries me is if hundreds of cars/thousands of people try to drive to Ohakea without tickets they will end up blocking all of the roads again and the official park and ride buses won't be going anywhere.

This would have been so much simpler if they'd had the airshow at Whenuapai...

Last airshow I went to at Whenuapai finished with a 3 hour crawl just to get back to North Shore...

You know, I find it a little odd that there's still no word about what's coming from Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan. If they're all stactic displays or another bloody herc, then it won't be much of a show. Sure, the F-18 and F-16 will be good... that there's a lot of metaphorical and literal airspace to fill (6 hours of it)... the RNZAF don't much much themselves, and with no warbirds in attendance, it could look pretty skinny!
If you look at Avalon, that's a 6 hour show with a lot of aircraft... so far we have a Herc, Orion, 757, NH-90, Seasprite, Augusta, King Air, Black Falcons, F-18, F-16 and C-17... that's cool, but it isn't 6 hours. Hopefully they have a contingency plan of getting those warbirds over. I'd argue if there's a Strikemaster, Vampire, Venom, Harvard and Spitefire about, they should ALWAYS be at an RNZAF air show!
Maybe I'm just getting paranoid, but surely it's time to release the info.

I'm guessing they will resume releasing next week, avoiding the lowest media attention time of the year.

Hi all, first time poster. Been following this thread for a while as I have been thinking of heading to the airshow. I live in Melbourne but have been curious to see if attendees would warrant a trip back over the ditch...Anyhow, as pointed out this is one week before Avalon, and I note that has announced a couple of RSAF F15SGs plus KC135 and C130 from the RSAF (all static only though). Given that there is still to be announced aircraft from Singapore for Ohakea I hope you all get the F15SGs (and others) as well....

I was burnt so badly by the last RNZAF show at Ohakea that I immediately wrote this one off. Having said that, if there was a fly in/fly out option which did not involve any car travel I would be sorely tempted.
Don's concerns sound valid - they will need to do some very effective marketing and customer education to make sure people know the deal regarding car parking and transport.

I'm hoping there will be on static display at least, Strikemasters, Harvards, DC3, Catalina, Vampire, P-40, Corsair, plus the resident Tiger Moth, Harvards, Devon(?), Macchi, Skyhawk, Sioux, Iroquois, Spitfire and Avenger. If most of those that can fly do, that would fill a couple of hours in the flying programme.

From what I have heard there will be very few warbirds displaying.

Here's hoping they are at least there on static display. Considering they are all going to be at Masterton the weekend before it would be logical to have them fly across the hill the following week. Surely the RNZAF can stump up for some gas to get them there? After all it is the RNZAF's Anniversary Airshow. They should have put out an open invitation to any genuine ex RNZAF aircraft or representatives of (like the Anson and Catalina) to attend. As for not allowing any GA fly-ins to the show...

I've been told that ramp space is an issue (which is promising).
