I'm advocating for the P-1 and the Orion doing some hot laps to work out who's best. But seriously, I guess the US are stopping by on the way over to Avalon? Any informed guesses what the UK has around this side of the world?

Given the Red Arrows have just done a big tour all the way to China, and RAF Typhoons went to Malaysia on exercise, I'm guessing a (relatively) cheap transport or tanker?

Would the UK get shoulder-tapped to demo an A400M? Or is that the exclusive preserve of the French? The closest A400M would be Malaysia though. Do you think if we asked especially nicely, the Japanese might bring a Kawasaki C-2? The first production variant (#203) entered service earlier this year, and the second is due next year. There are also the two XC-2 prototypes (#201 & #202) flying presently. I hope they bring a P-1 back to NZ again as well. Currently they have 10 in service including the prototype; the 11th has just starting ground testing it seems. Here's a good Youtube channel for those interested in Japanese aircraft: www.youtube.com/user/maplef12Hopefully the US bring a P-8. Would love to see some trials between the P-8 & the P-1 operating from Whenuapai (which may be an uncomfortably short runway for the P-8). It's probable that US aircraft on their way through to Avalon may make a stopover at the Ohakea show. I think the show is a grand opportunity for those intending to bid for the Future Air Mobility & Future Air Surveillance capabilities to showcase their wares. Once one contender confirms an appearance, we may see the others rush to sign up as well.

The rumours I have heard include lots of never seen in NZ before aircraft types including the F-22, F-35, B-52/B-1 (won't land, will fly in from Guam or elsewhere), F-16s & Super Hornets. Should be well worth attending. I have bought my tickets already...

Don, those sorts of rumours are what could make me buy a ticket. I just hope that, if that is the plan, the new US leadership* doesn't scuttle it.

I'd be surprised if those rumours weren't around, regardless of the likelihood!

Errr... no, not really. i'd be hoping a Rhino or two would be making their public debuts. And let's hope the Yanks can manage something more than a flamin' C-17 or LC-130. I suspect 'rumour control' is in overdrive looking at Dons' list but here's hoping some decent heavy metal turns up for those attending!

Have the RNZAF released anything that resembles a programme for the two days? I understand that they don't have confirmed attendees yet, but I want to know if they plan to run the same programme on both days.

they have confirmed on Facebook that it is the exact same programme on two separate days... one of the ways to reduce traffic congestion. No information was provided about the programme, but they advised the above as part of their traffic management system

The Fast And Furious at Air Tattoo
Friday, 2 December 2016, 4:17 pm Press Release: New Zealand Defence Force Media Release
2 December 2016
The Fast And Furious at Air Tattoo
There will be some very fast aircraft in the skies for the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s 2017 Air Tattoo in February next year.
It has been touted as one of the most exciting events of the summer and now it can be confirmed the Royal Australian Air Force will be bringing three F-18 Hornets, one C17 and one C27 aircraft to RNZAF Base Ohakea for the two-day festival of military aircraft to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the RNZAF.
Other militaries confirmed for the festival are the United States Air Force, Singapore Air Force, Royal Malaysian Air Force and Japan Air Self-Defence Force. They are expected to confirm the aircraft they will be bringing over the next few weeks.
Ohakea Base Commander Group Captain Nick Olney says he is delighted so many militaries want to help celebrate RNZAF’s contribution to New Zealand and the south-west Pacific.
“We value the relationships with our fellow air forces and the response so far shows the mutual respect. The Air Tattoo is shaping up to be a great spectacle for everyone.
“We’re really excited about the RAAF confirmation and while we can’t yet confirm which other aircraft will be attending due to each air force’s operational requirements, I can guarantee the event here at Ohakea will be a sight to remember.
“In an effort to address the traffic issues associated with the last air show at RNZAF Base Ohakea, entry to the event will be by ticket only.”
Tickets for the 2017 Air Tattoo and are on sale now through Ticketek.
Ends

I saw the advert for a day trip by Air Chatams in the Aviation News at $395. Very tempted as the NZBCA plans to run a DC3 down on Friday fell over. Its apparently going both days.

As anybody else successful managed to arrange to travel on the FlyDC3 overnight charter?
I have been in communication with Jessica for some months over this, but it seems to be very difficult to get any actual confirmation and payment through. Its all still pretty vague.

The two F.16 will (I'll bet) be the Wild Weasels out of Misawa and I'll also bet that Smudge will be the display pilot from Pacific Air Forces Display team. They displayed at Townsville after 13 refuels from Yakota and it was a great demo...... I have their display profile and also the words that their commentator reads from - AKA as long as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Well worth going just for this.

Who'd have guessed we'd see F-16s at Ohakea? ;-)
Great news! Very very cool. Bravo USAF and RNZAF for getting this together.
I'm part of the generation of Kiwis that has never seen an active service USAF combat aircraft in person, so this is - as Ando said - reason enough for me to go. It's no B-2 or B-52 but it's still pretty exciting!
