The new Aviation Heritage Centre at Omaka, Blenheim, opens next weekend, on Saturday the 9th of December 2006.
I won't be there but I hope some memebrs here get along and take lots of photos for the forum to see. Who's planning to attend? There's an air display too I believe.
I note that one of the new aircraft to be in the museum is a German WWI Albatross B.II, and the Classic Fighters website seems to indicate that it's genuine, and not a replica like most WWI fighters at Omaka. That's a great coup.

There is nothing I have seen that comes as close to the reality of the hardship of war. It should be part of the school cirriculum, its just that good. Cheers

Unfornately the weather has stopped many from flying down to attend the museum opening. Its blowing real bad at Ardmore today.

What a shame Joe. It's blowing and wet here too. I did see a white with red trim Yak 52 circling low overhead earlier, I wonder if it's on its way down from somewhere.

Quick note while I'm supposed to be working - apparently there's a story about the opening on 3 News tonight (we've just included it in one of our promos).
Fingers crossed that it doesn't get dropped due to "timing issues".
Cheers, Stu.

Dave McDonald has kindly sent me some photos from the museum which he says I can use, and also the link to their website www.omaka.org.nz/I'll add the photos soon, but in the meantime all I can say is I'm realy, really impressed indeed! Well done to all the team who've striven to complete what looks like an amazing and very important museum.

A wonderful diorama depicting the true life miracle escape by Keith Caldwell (of Cambridge!) when he collided with another SE.5a and lost control. In order to try to get some stability from his spiralling aircraft he stepped out onto the wing, balancing it a little, till it almost hit the ground. He then stepped off just before impact, remaining uninjured. This incredible feat was witnessed by soldiers in a nearby trench. Now we can see it recreated at Omaka!
