"Especially when there will be 3 yaks! Not to mention 3 spitfires!"
This may be more supposition than fact?

I wish I was in the know..... I must admit , Id like to see a few more definitly "attending " aircraft on the web site , rather than just pictures of previous shows , however , we have at least one Yak3 ( Steadfast ) , and one Spitfire ( the resident MKxiv ) . I suspect there will be more representives of those types there , but if not , those two are still world class drawcards . Should be awesome !

Well we do have resident yak 3 vvs, anson mk1 rra so can ASSUME they should be in attendance. Brendan Deere has always been a great supporter of Omaka with his aircraft, so that should be at least 2 Yaks and 2 Spitfires.
Either way the Omaka team always put on an amazing show and I have my tickets!

No aircraft are 'definitely' attending until they arrive at the show (residents aside)

I was having a chat with Graham Orphan and he mentioned that the airshow is hampered this year by the fact that there biggest chunk of audience usually comes from Christchurch but now of course the journey between Christchurch and Omaka is a lot more difficult due to the road (SH1) and the railway both being closed thanks to the Kaikoura earthquake, and also Air New Zealand having removed their service between Christchurch and Woodbourne. So the Christchurch people face an extra couple of hours travelling on the inland route and for some this may put them off. Of course extra distance also means extra costs too.
This is a sad situation, and I'm sure it is effecting so many events as well and businesses and families, etc. But I wondered if maybe we can do something about it for those going to the airshow. Is anyone keen to carpool with other WONZ Forum members? This could cut down the costs significantly if you have four people putting in for fuel rather than just a solitary driver. Plus you'll have entertainment along the way, chatting with fellow forumites about aviation all the way.
I wonder if there's also opportunity for a similar aeroplane-pooling. If you're planning to fly up from Chch, can you offer seats in the aircraft to others, who can share costs?
This is just an idea but I am sure if it even helps out a handful of people to get to the airshow it'll be worth it. So if you plan to fly or drive and think you can help by offering a seat, feel free to post here.

The Corsair was in the air over Wairarapa a few days ago (you can never, ever mistake that sound, and as soon as I heard it I rushed outside and saw it), so presumably it is being kept airworthy for Classic Fighters and I would imagine the Hood-based P-40 will likewise almost certainly cross Cook Strait for the airshow. Less than six weeks to go now!

Yes, both Masterton based fighters are on the list to appear. That was Gene having a blat in his Corsair when you saw it.

I know that I am looking forward to coming this year, my first to an Omaka airshow. I booked the motel in Picton last year when my wife together with some friends participated in the half marathon. Due to inaction on my part I didn't book air tickets early enough to get cheap flights to Nelson, forget Blenheim, so I am now flying to Wellington from Auckland with a mate and catching the ferry across on the Friday. Unfortunately we arrive in Picton at 5pm so not worth buying an evening ticket for Friday. I will be getting a 3 day pass and I am sure I will thoroughly enjoy it. I will also be back there in May for this years Half so I will look around the new display then. I hope plenty of you guys will attend from Christchurch. Cheers

I hope plenty of you guys will attend from Christchurch. Ultimatly the closure of SH1 has added about 2 hours ( possibly a bit more on a holiday weekend ) to the trip between Blenheim and Christchurch , so not really an insurmountable problem ( but its two hours of roads that require a fair bit of concentration , so it does seem longer ) . Hopefully it wont affect too many peoples decision wether to come or not . Pleased to hear that the Corsair and P40 are intending to come , it just wouldnt seem right to not have them there !

I currently travel this road twice a month and use a simple formula. For CHC to BHE, look at what times the ferries depart Picton (Interislander and Bluebridge), take off 6-7 hours and don't depart around this time, opposite for return trip. It's roughly 5.5hrs in non ferry traffic and I have had one trip at over 8 hours when I got it wrong! I have heard of truckies leaving 2 hours before another and arriving at Picton at the same time!

I'm hoping to attend from Cromwell. Keen to car pool if there are any heading up from this end of the country. I'm currently thinking about flying Qtown to Wgtn and then coming back via ferry as the most realistic option of getting there.

Not the same shape but of the same performance... you will be surprised by the big Yak Trust me, when that bit of news was announced I was over the moon! I followed its escapades at Reno, then the move to Oz, but never thought I'd get to see it fly without leaving NZ. Speaking of which, I understand Steadfast is expected to arrive by the end of the month. Has anyone else noticed we're only a month away from the show?!

In my opinion Steadfast is a lot more impressive than the Allison engined Yaks.

Yes Zac, less than a month now. I'm starting to panic, not sure I can make it, the airline prices from Hamilton are so big these days. Everywhere else gets cheaper options and Hamilton goes up and up... and never any Grabaseats either, and no Hamilton offers in their one day sale a few days back, stinks. A bit of competition there would do wonders.

I'm paying the earth to get there and back - only because I can afford it, my wife ok'd it, and a way was made available at each stage for me. I am driving to Napier to a friend's - stay with him. Travel on same flight as he and his FIL. Same car at Blenheim, same accomm at Blenheim, different flight back to Napier on Sunday (more seats/flight made available) but stay his place again, then drive back to Tokoroa on Monday. So I only have one day of viewing all for $700 odd - ouch!! Oh plus a heap of petrol as well!!

Has anyone else noticed we're only a month away from the show?! I'm on leave in three weeks time (I take off a week either side of Easter weekend). And one of my friends who will be attending the airshow as part of my party just commented to me in a text yesterday that it is exactly four weeks (yesterday) until we cross Cook Strait to our usual bi-annual holiday home in Picton. And the day we cross Cook Strait to Marlborough for Classic Fighters is the day Air NZ's website begins accepting bookings for the date I wish to fly home following NEXT Easter, so I'll be diving in to make sure I'm the early bird who gets the worm aka the cheapest seat prices for return tickets to the southern lakes district. Classic Fighters will be here before you realise it....

No panic, I just had a search around the net, and decided to bite the bullet and fly from Auckland to Blenheim, instead of from Hamilton. It adds a shitload more travel time but cuts the cost significantly. So the good news is I just booked my airline tickets and bus tickets and I'm all set for the big trip!! Yey!
Now I hope we can sell a few more Forum Meet tickets.... that is my fundraiser to help get me down there.
