Hi,
Not sure if this is the best place to post / okay to post here. Let me know...
A group of us are looking to head over to Wings Over Illawarra and/or Warbirds Downunder next year. Quite possible that we may try for both.
Has anyone been?
If so, any recommendations on areas / places to stay and best way to get there? Fly into Sydney (or Canberra for Temora) & drive?

Both are outstanding shows and well worth your patronage. Temora may be hard for accommodation at this stage. Most of it goes within hours of the WD announcement. I tried a place last night, no joy. Be prepared to move out to a town in the surrounding region. Or, the hotels in the Main Street had some very basic rooms which I once used several years ago.
You could consider flying into Sydney, getting a rental car, drive to Canberra and stay there visiting the Australian War Memorial ( outstanding aviation exhibits), then get up early and drive to Temora in time for the show. It's quite do-able.
Wings Over Illawarra, I stay in Sydney and get the train out there, stops right alongside the airport.
The Aussies do it very well, you won't be disappointed.

Agree that (from my single attendance at each) that they are well worth it. For Illawara, on the Thursday I caught the train from the SYD to Albion Park, walked to HARS and took the tour, then took the train back to Wollongong. The next day I rented a car, took the scenic route (up via Kangaroo Valley) to Nowra and visited the Fleet Air Arm Museum. I then stayed somewhere fairly local to the airport (Wollongong had the feature of car rental places that weren't in Sydney and walkable from a train station) for the weekend. I scheduled myself a lazy half day in Sydney on the Monday after returning the car and training back from Wollongong. Note there is a sodding great Escarpment west of the airport, which does weird things to the evening light. www.flickr.com/photos/errolgc/albums/72157665600721383 |

I did Temora in 2015 and Illawarra last year and thoroughly enjoyed both. Agree with Errol re Temora and driving from Canberra in the morning as that was a nice drive with plenty of time for a coffee stop in Murrumburrah. We drove down from Sydney for Illawarra which is easy down the freeway then got a park just outside the airport.

If accomm is looking difficult for Temora, then we may have to re-think that one as we wouldn't be in a position to commit for awhile. I'll see what the feeling is about a return trip drive from Canberra for the show as an option though.
Illawarra is definitely looking good then. Do they put on extra trains (express trains / less stops??) for the show? Staying in Syd could be a good idea as bringing the wives may be the price of permission to go for a couple of the guys (with the wives going shopping)!
Would it be worth considering staying in Wollongong?

I think Sydney trains put on additional carriages for the airshow weekend. The south coast trains drop from 8 to 4 carriages out of peak. Should be plenty of accommodation in Wollongong and all around that area, easy.

The drive from Canberra to Temora is an easy one, about two and a half hours taken leisurely and lots of scenery........ well as far as rolling hills and cows goes anyway. Wagga Wagga has beaucoup accommodation and is about 45 mins drive to the south of Temora. As to Sydney for Wings....... heaven for the Memsahibs in shopping and peace and tranquility for the Sahibs getting on the train to Albion Park. Buses or a 10 min walk to the airfield

Junee is closer than Wagga Wagga to Temora, and it's a gorgeous town with some great history of its own.The railway museum there is well worth a visit. And the town's deputy Mayor is a member of this very forum.

Can I add in Cootamundra, places to stay and an excellent bakery. At the airport (and often seen at Temora) is a wide range of ag aircraft operated by Col Adams Aerial Services. Pretty good if your a rail fan as well.

On the same subject matter, Temora has announced all their showcase days for 2018 together with the Warbirds Downunder "Big" show. A number of two day showcases in there as well.

Good luck with the WONZ Gear they were all sold as far as I know (with some difficulty) and I am not sure it's an experience Dave would like to repeat!!!!! |

Haha, nah actually in reality my own forum shirts are getting pretty worn out and a bit tired now. Maybe it is time to think about a new shirt design and release? (I cannot believe I am thinking this)

Legionnaires Caps with the forum logo embossed on them. We all go to airshows and inevitably end up getting horribly sunburnt on the back of the neck (yeah, I know there is such a thing as sunblock, but I tend to put it on first thing, then forget all about it for the rest of the day). Hence why legionnaires caps would be a bloody good idea, because not only would they protect the back of one's neck, but they'd allow other forum members to recognise each other. That's called killing two birds with one stone. I'd buy a few of those (one to wear and a few spares) if you went for something like that. I always wear my forum cap on the first day of a multi-day airshow (when I'm generally out and about wandering around the airfield), then usually change to something else on subsequent days when I'm parked in a gold pass grandstand for the duration. I've also got a couple of forum tee-shirts, but I seldom wear them, 'cause I like to wear a shirt with pockets when I'm at airshows. Perhaps some forum shirts (with pockets) could be a go if enough people were interested? |

If I get T-shirts done again they will be standard T-shirts and all one standard colour. I am not messing around with everyone's variations again, it's way too much hassle.

Farm out the hassle. I use a website called RedBubble. You just upload the design artwork and their site lets each customer do the variations in colour and size and style. They print and deliver, you set the price and just get a fee (which you set) for each one sold. Yak Driver t-shirts on RedBubble Quality of shirts has been good and the delivery has been 5 to 7 working days in most cases. There are probably other web sites that do the same thing in NZ, but it is an example of giving the hassle to the professionals... |
