... I was only commenting on why the tank was carried during the actual displays and not the transit etc. Two were broken at one point! You can tell they are old when they send three to cover a 1-ship for three displays commitment - and needed them! Once again I sucked at taking photos of fast grey pointy things, good thing I don't care about them much!

ZK-WLT at a good guess, it was sold on trademe for bugger all, ex Alexandra. [Qquote author=" Peter Lewis " source="/post/275715/thread" timestamp="1556020634"] Built from a Zlin ( or something like that ) . Apparently a very similar post war aircraft to a Stuka , but to be powered by a Lycoming ( I think the sign said ) .Yes , intended to fly . Which of course raises the question - which particular Zlin Z-137 is the donor? [/quote]

I don't know if anyone has made the historical connection between the RAAF "Hornet" and the Avenger. The USS Hornet (CV8) was the carrier that launched the doolittle raid in 1942 and carried Avengers from several USN Squadrons during WWII.

Hello everybody. Posting my thoughts on the recent Classic Fighters Airshow Firstly a big thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers. Without you we would not have an airshow.
I have attended many Classic Airshows but felt this one was a bit "flat". My main reason for attending this time was to see the F18 and it certainly did not disappoint. Judging by the crowd on the Saturday, I would say they came to see the F18 as well. Pity about the weather on the Sunday....crowd would have been even bigger than the Saturday.
Unfortunately I need to mention a few negatives. Where were all the "exhibitors" tents. Are the organisers charging too much rent? Not enough interest? Certainly a disappointingly small number of people flogging their wares etc. A friend of mine travelled a long way to see the "Wingnut Models" tent and was disappointed. By the way that same friend visited a collection of aircraft at Masterton? and was denied entry to the hangar and was not permitted to take any photographs of the World War 1 aircraft there.....and he just built one!.. Strange indeed.
Gold pass holders normally have all the action in front of them, but some aircraft seemed to use Rwy 30 as the flight line...a small thing but they do pay the big money.
I had problems with the car park. Being a long time visitor I knew the drill but was messed around by the paid Security and others like you wouldn't believe. Not enough space here to rave on about the parking and nearby roadways but the paid security should know their job. Which brings me to another question....why so many security people....we need professionals for the bag check at the only entrance, but what are all these other people doing? How much does it cost?
I could go on, but this is probably enough to create some discussion. Will the show go on in 2 years? I hope so but I only give it a 50% chance. I always enjoy the show and go every 2 years. I see it as slightly casual and informal, which is good. You can get up close to all the aircraft and its always great to meet old friends, although not so many of them there this time.
Again, thanks to the sponsors, volunteers and organisers. …..putting on my tin hat now to wait for response

Sorry guys I am a first poster and some parts of my post disappeared.
More negativity !! An experienced airshow performer said to me that it was obvious that some of the airshow acts was not practiced.
I noted that the Yak display team was very professional, but the Harvard team while providing a slick show was lacking in formation skills.
The so called New Zealand aerobatic champion flying the MXS completely forgot about the wind and ended well South of the field on a couple of occasions....I couldn't do any better myself, but I am not a champion !!!....anyway ..putting the tin hat on....lycomingr680

I would suggest some of the niggles you experienced would have been reaction to a recent event, so i think you are probably lucky the show even happened.
Car parking/traffic and 'security'(the little hitler on an open public road at Masterton was a case in point and that was prior to said event) seem to be an increasingly annoying aspect of what were once very relaxed shows.
I feel your frustration to the point i rarely attend shows now.

Really enjoying all the images and stories from the show. Does anyone know why the Hornet carried the centreline tanks for the displays? Certainly didn’t seem to impact on the quality of the display however. One thing I dislike about the Hornet displays I've here in Australia is the lack of stores, and even racks. I much prefer the look of an aircraft with tanks etc fitted, clean aircraft just look wrong (another reason why the F-35 leaves me cold) . I understand why they do it but I'd prefer a less dynamic display with an aircraft fitted with stores. The aircraft looks more typical that way (hence why I need to go to Willy town fora photography session . Anyway, enough of the rambling, here's one of the photos I got on the Friday IMG_3153_edit by Calum Gibson, on Flickr

Luv that shot Calum! For me that scheme is brilliant putting the Korean lion (grumpy monkey) on the inside tail like that. But then I’m a tad biased eh. It must have come straight out of the willi paint shop and gone straight to NZ. I agree with you re the stores and mixing it up for displays breaks that same old feeling. The clean single with a dedicated display pilot is part of that. One of the best displays I ever saw was 3 with tanks do a high g full power low turn at the Sydney Harbour bridge one Australia Day. Further to broken jets..doesn’t Easty have form? .Did he not break the A4 he flew at the disbandment display at Ohakea? ;-)

I would be very grateful to see any photos you guys took of the Avenger and Hornet in formation on the Saturday. We have got a lot of feedback about that pass, I just wanted to do it to get the airfield and crowd in the background, we ended up being reasonably low and the angles worked well and seems to be a highlight for some at the show. My flickr account is stuffed again so I will pass some photos on of the Hornet to Dave to post.
I thought if we flew over the field with the Hornet in tow people would come to the crowdline earlier for the Hornet display which would make for a better photo and it did! The pass was not part of the airshow display as such but probably looked like that, Easty flew so well during the pass even with some frantic hand signals at times and when we got things a lot closer together once we moved away from the populated area.
Cheers

Cheers Gavin. Saw some of your pics on the Yealands airshow FB page...stunning is an understatement. The Worimi shot with the green airfield below is a beauty. I think the backdrop and your unique position has brought out that Hornet scheme at its very best. Gotta ask what was your photo position in the Avenger like? Also the WB take off shot of the 77sqn jet is great too with the green runway edge and the runway light in the heat haze.you also know it’s not in Aus because no dirt.. . I know you were after pics of your formation but this vid caught it from a distance .. Did anyone catch any pics of the F18s on the ground together at Woodbourne?

Bit on her here. www.jiwanprasad.com/portfolios/raaf/Be interested hear the story of the "grumpy monkey" scheme, thank you?

Thx That’s a great link on Worimi. Re Grumpy.I believe that jet has had the green tail and the 77sqn outer tail flash for a while now and was at Red Flag earlier in the year in that config. The most recent addition is the inner stab image and the green spine. I like the touch of the a/c used by the sqn over the years down the top of the spine.

For me it was a thoroughly enjoyable 3 days, despite the weather on Sunday. Yes it was a bit light on WWI aircraft this time around and the RNZAF presence in the air was pretty disappointing, but I felt the rest was a great mix. The theme "Woman in Aviation" was also great. Pam Collins talking us through her old Pitts display was a really nice touch.
Omaka for me has always been as much about the social side of things and catching up with friends and it didn't disappoint again this year. The 3 day Gold Pass is great value for money, including a buffet lunch on the Saturday and Sunday as well as that amazing "goodies" bag on arrival. The Friday night twilight show was spectacular, the best yet in my opinion.
The highlight for me was seeing my old Skyhawk boss Easty perform in the F-18 (and catch up with him in the bar on Saturday night!). We were chatting at the gate at the entrance to the MAC bar when the Bristol taxied up and did its dry ice act! Easty was blown away and his comment "Only at Omaka" summed it up.
The Yak team display is simply world class, Bill Reid's Anson display likewise, as for seeing the 3 Spitfires together... you will only see that at Omaka! Seeing Bill Reid's Hudson project in Restoration Row was also a highlight. That aircraft is just so historic and significant to RNZAF WWII history. I'm looking forward to following its progress.
We never experienced any car parking or traffic issues. My advice is get there early and leave late! All of the security staff we encountered were friendly and professional. They had a job to do and that is just a consequence of recent events.
Thank you to all the many volunteers who make this show happen. Bring on 2021!
