The racing with the smaller aeroplanes (Lancairs and Thunder Mustangs0 is pretty exciting as well. A great battle for the lead in the race just run, where Andrew Finlay in Lancair "One Moment" overtook six times world champion Jeff Lavelle in Lancair "Race 39" to win the heat was pretty awesome.

I thought Lavelle had blown his engine at one point. I was sure he was trailing smoke down the Valley of Speed just after Finlay passed him.

I saw in an earlier race they said that it wasn't smoke, I cannot recall though what it was.

353.8, much better. Let us hope that there is a reserve that can be tapped. Picking off a Mustang would be nice. And yes, I'm lovin the Sport class. I've got some space in my garage, might have to build a 400mph Lancair.

I saw in an earlier race they said that it wasn't smoke, I cannot recall though what it was. Possibly ADI, Anti-Detonation Injection. You can really see it with Dreadnought in the Unlimiteds as a vapour that streams from the wing roots. I don’t really know what it does but it’s put out by spray bars installed (I think) in front of the radiator. For what it’s worth no-one at the AAFO Air Racin’ forum seems to know what Jeff’s plane was trailing either.

Could be a similar system to the water injection on #fullnoise, injects water into the radiator, helps keep engine temps down.

Antidetonation: "Water injection (engine) In internal combustion engines, water injection, also known as anti-detonant injection (ADI), can spray water into the incoming air or fuel-air mixture, or directly into the cylinder to cool certain parts of the induction system where "hot points" could produce premature ignition"

Interestingly, the 3B (or Silver) Unlimited heat results show that Full Noise would have won comfortably (like last year). Dennis Sanders in Sea Fury Eagles Wings won it at 340.6 mph

Yep. It is an Anti-Detonation System on Jeff Lavelle’s Glasair III. Jeff Lavelle’s Aircraft infoLooks like even an air cooled Lycoming can have ADI added... I did not know that. I don’t know if it runs the whole time or whether he flicks it in manually when he wants a bit of extra boost.

352.6, looks like Graeme flew a steady race. I was hoping to pick off Goldfinger. johnnyfalcon, my Pitts S-2B will do 160mph at 75% power with a Lycoming IO-540,260 hp. The Sport aircraft are getting 600 hp with high compression pistons and turbo charging with the same engine. I was thinking that I might mount a Learjet engine on my Pitts (Like Screamin Sasquatch) to get the speed up. Joking. A Pitts is the best and most demanding plane that I have ever flown, after 10 years she puts a smile on my face, every flight. I think I'll keep her. A pleasure sharing this time with you folks. Forza Yakovlev!

Forza Yakovlev! Feel free to come back anytime Snaffles! Well I'd like to offer a hearty "WELL-DONE" to Graeme and Full Noise!! Raced again in Unlimited - GOLD. They came 7th of 8 and beat a Seafury. They were within 2 seconds (1.3 MPH) of beating Gold Finger a P-51D and 4 seconds (2.5 MPH) of beating 924G another Seafury! The effort and commitment to attend and compete must be extraordinary. Whakamihi Graeme!!

Agreed, congratulations to the team!!
Imagine how well they'd go next year if they get a Sea Fury!

Indeed! Curiously, the top three results for Unlimited Silver final were all faster than the Seafury On Eagles Wings which won the Silver heat and bumped up to Gold but finished slower than Graeme and those three!
Or how about a Yancey race-tuned and prepared engine? I believe Graeme has the right spirit and a great team behind him. I do wonder if the Yak-3 is a little disadvantaged due to its light weight and vulnerability to the wake and mechanical turbulence on the course. Irrespective, my hat goes off to him and the team.

I'm sure the commentary team said that it was Dennis Sanders' last race at Reno, so maybe he was just savouring the experience in On Eagles Wings?

This may be of interest: (from owners websites or NAA registry) does anyone know the version of V1710 in full noise?
Dreadnaught TMk20 - R4360 4000+hp Miss America P51D - Rolls Royce Merlin ?1710hp? Sawbones FB11 - R3350 2700-3000hp Argonaught MK11 - R2800 2400hp 924 TMK20 - Centaurus Mk18 2500hp Goldfinger F51D - Packard V1650-7 ?1315hp? Full Noise Yak 3M - Allison V1710 ?1500hp? Eagle Wings TMK20 - R2800 2000hp
The HP ratings are off the owners websites. Where there are ?? they are the stock HP ratings for the engines and of course there may have been changes made to increase HP for the races, etc.
I never realised that the V1650 was 400hp less than the Merlin 63 it was based on, perhaps for better fuel consumption and therefore better long range performance (important for the P51 roll)?

The engine that was put into the 3M was an Allison V-1710-111. 1500hp sounds about right. Kind of why I tuned in to this forum, to find out what if anything was done to the engine to make it more competitive. Steadfast, a Yak-3mpw has about 300hp on Full Noise. This is all from internet searching and I don't know if any of it is correct. Aerodynamically, it looks like a scoop was removed from the top of Full Noise's engine cowl and I've heard that the gear doors are an area that can be improved. I'm sure that each team holds their cards close to the chest.
