Tickets purchased at Cronulla cinema for first session on opening day.......I saw the original on first day of release in Manteca, California with my great mate Arthur P Zottarelli, sadly no longer with us. Cannot wait. The music really made a huge part of the success of the first version and just hope that it is up to scratch for the second. Critical reviews have stated the flying is phenomenal.

Link: www.autoevolution.com/news/tom-cruise-really-thought-hed-be-allowed-to-pilot-an-f-a-18-super-hornet-for-top-gun-189021.htmlTom Cruise’s mantra is to deliver high-quality, convincing, and immersive entertainment on the big screen. This means that he leaves no stunt to the stuntmen if he can do it himself and the insurance department clears it. That said, there are limits to what Tom Cruise can and can’t do, and piloting an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet is one of them. Top Gun: Maverick, which opens in U.S. theaters on May 27, sees him reprise the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell after nearly three decades, and this means fresh aerial action sequences and plenty of awesome dogfighting scenes are coming our way. The movie was initially supposed to come out in 2020, so it’s been on the promo trail for a very long time. The fact that real F/A-18 Super Hornets are used, a real Navy base, real Navy helicopters, and that the movie was made Pentagon’s direct stamp of approval have been widely mediated. One tiny detail that slipped through the cracks is that Tom Cruise really hoped he’d be the one to pilot a fighter jet. For the dogfighting aerial scenes, actors had to undergo special training that would allow them to act, say their lines, and turn on their cameras at the correct time without puking or losing their cool. Cruise, as producer and experienced pilot (and overall badass), was in charge of the training program. Still, the actors sat in the cockpit, with a real Navy pilot at the controls. As ScreenRant points out, Cruise hoped he’d be the pilot, so he asked the US Navy to grant him permission. “[Producer Jerry] Bruckheimer maintains that the US Navy ultimately denied Cruise's requests to fly the Super Hornet, which boasts a price tag in excess of $70 million,” the report adds. Like the rest of the cast, Cruise had to settle for being a passenger in the fighter jet. It’s still more than most action movie stars can brag about but fall short of his expectations. Cruise has built his action movie star reputation around the fact that he does most of his stunts, even the most dangerous ones that insurers balk at. In Maverick, he still flies “some” helicopters and a P-51 propeller-driven fighter plane, both of which he's licensed for, because he believes CGI (computer-generated imagery) cheapens the storytelling experience, even if used in combination with old-school physical stunt work. Just don’t let Michael Bay hear that.

To be fair "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding was my actual favourite from the soundtrack.

Well that was kind of hokey and full of plot holes, but I enjoyed the hell out of it!
No spoilers, but don’t go in expecting realism and verisimilitude. Enjoy it for the raucous Hollywood blockbuster it was designed to be.
Some great callbacks to the original movie. Some great flying sequences, but a whole lot of “No f-ing way!” moments.
Recommend.

Yeah, I watched it at home tonight.
It is certainly one of the better modern movies.
I doubt I will ever see it at a cinema all the same.
A mix between the original, 633 Squadron, Dambusters and Star Wars.

I went and saw this film today. I totally loved it. Awesome! It's not lost that Top Gun feeling, it just seems so right. Some of the flying scenes take your breath away. And a terrific soundtrack! Recommended!

Dave....Hell Yeah ! Enjoyed it immensely on the big screen. Some of those flying sequences were just sensational (in the true sense of the word) and the homage to the first iteration and soundtrack matched it perfectly. Do yourself a favour - see it on the Big Screen !!!

Watched it last night, shouted the Mrs into the Gold Lounge so enjoyed the movie immensely with some cold ale, sliders and a beaut cheese board. My idea of a perfect date night! PS - don't be one of those "I'll wait for it to come out on DVD" sort of people - this is a BIG SCREEN movie

I am going to make the trip to Auckland to experience it (again) on IMAX. The bigger the screen you can see it on, the better IMO.

I see it is now Tom Cruise's biggest box office debut. Impressive when you think how many blockbusters he has been in.

Really enjoyed my viewing at the local IMAX on Friday night. The storyline is tight and balances well between fantasy/believability. Also really well pays homage to and builds on the original. Few issues like one minute the pilot is flying a E model then next a F model Rhino and also they used a F35 burner can in the Rhino carrier takeoff scene ... but minor things really.
