Looks good. Especially the bit at the end, real or??? CGI would be cheaper than the hard currency required to rent one off the IRIAF.

Can't wait, will have to have a good script to out do the first movies one liners! Is that a P51 I spotted briefly at around 1.30, wonder if it's Tom's own Mustang "Kiss me Kate?"

I am sure it is his own Mustang, because there was some media coverage recently that he'd turned up in it on set.
It looks a lot more like a remake rather than a sequel....

I’m still going to go see it. The trailer looks good to me. I especially liked the low-flight, the cat-shot sequence, and the tactical half-roll to go over the mountain pass bit. Hopefully the US Navy got behind it enough to minimise the amount of CGI required. Tom Cruise is a smart film-maker and I’m sure it will be solid. I just hope it will actually be spectacular! BTW, his P-51 is no longer marked up as “Kiss Me Kate”. The lettering came off when the divorce went through.

Oh yes I will probably go and see it in the cinema too. It looks pretty good and should be entertaining, and nostalgic. I lost count of how many times the original Top Gun was played in the TV Room on weekends on my recruit course. It was the number one film among my fellow cadets, most of whom stated they had first decided to look at joining the RNZAF specifically because they'd watched that film. A valuable recruiting tool for not just the US Navy but also the RNZAF back then, as we had Skyhawks just like in the film. Also there was a shop in Blenheim that stocked and sold shitloads of the green US military 'bomber' jackets and Tomcat patches to the buzzcut-sporting RNZAF recruits. I'd love to revisit that shop. It is probably no longer there 30 years later.
That catapult shot looked like it was real. Do they have two seat Hornets? Or was that very clever film magic? I know he flew for real in Tomcats for the first film so it would not surprise me if he did a cat shot.

Just seen the trailer for the new Top Gun flick. Looks like there migh be some great footage using Hornets. The final few seconds however shows a Tomcat in flight. Are there any Tomcats flying today or would it most likely be CGI?

I have merged a new post that popped up in a new thread from Machina on this topic into this existing thread and I have moved it to Aviation Films to make it easier to find.

The final few seconds however shows a Tomcat in flight. Are there any Tomcats flying today or would it most likely be CGI? The only airworthy Tomcats now are operated by the Iranian air force. No US tomcat has flown since they retired them in 2006, so my money is on CGI. This hints that F-14's will be involved in the movie in some way though. The fuselage marking is slightly reminiscent of the symbol on the Iranian flag, and it's an F-14A as still operated by them rather than a B or a D (although the latter is probably coincidence). . . theaviationist.com/2018/12/18/tom-cruise-with-f-14-tomcat-on-snowy-set-in-tahoe-top-gun-escape-scene-filmed/

Fab film, am sure Mark 2 will be even more impressive! With the "TOPGUN DIRECTORS CUT" (available on DVD) there is a very good doco of the making of TOPGUN. All the actors got at least one back seat ride in an F14, Anthony Edwards was the only one who did not get sick! To get Cruise in the right frame of mind he also got a flight in a Blue Angels TA4.
