Well it’s official NZ1044 is now beginning her civilian life as ZK-OTU making it on to the register earlier this week, and in other good news the noisy round thing turned up and looks amazing, the long awaited R1340, now just waiting on the final piece of the puzzle, the propeller which hopefully we will have very soon.

Wonderful news. Yesterday the representatives of CAA signed of NZ1044, ZK-OTU, as airworthy, and today Bevan test flew her. I am so happy to see this wonderful and historically significant Harvard finally airborne. I was with Bevan the day he purchased it and I have been kept up to date all the way through the restoration. He has done a wonderful job restoring it, with the able assistance of his partner Lucy Newell and Ross Brodie, and the team at Twenty24 and the others he mentions below. Bevan wrote on Facebook the following: "For the first time in nearly 65 years NZ1044 takes to the air again after a near 3 year restoration, an awesome job by the team at Twenty24 Ltd, Heli Support limited (painting) Aero Technology (engine/prop) and SAB Avionics. It all came together well with only one small snag noted on the first flight. Awesome to have this piece of history back in the air again after a long hibernation."

I think this must be the first Harvard restored to the air from a ground bound aircraft (ie not just a repair after a groundloop) since NZ1053 was returned back to the air in the mid-1990's? Or have there been any after that one restored and flown?
This one will be likely the lowest houred Harvard in NZ, and the nicest.

Congratulations Bevan! What a huge achievement! You've added a real gem to the crown of active historic airframes. Lots of blood, sweat, tears, curses (not to mention $$$) I'm sure. I'm looking forward to seeing her perform at Omaka.

In New Zealand yes but other exRNZAF airframes have flown again in Australia. NZ1044 looks amazing, look forward to seeing her in the air in person!

Certainly a stunning restoration with an original scheme that will make it stand out from the other Harvards. Congratulations Bevan and to all involved in this magnificent piece of aviation restoration. Look forward to hopefully seeing it in person, workmanship like this needs to be appreciated first hand.

I was an unsuccessful tenderer for 1044 back when she was disposed of after her technical training school stint. Have alway kept an eye on her and I’m delighted and in no doubt she is in the best hands possible. I’m thrilled with what Bevan and Lucy are bringing to our NZ heritage aviation scene. And for the record, amongst all the exotic high-end aircraft, the humble nuggety charismatic Harvard remains my all-time favourite. It has a bit of “everything” going for it. And is just so damn cool ! Top work Bevan.

That's great to see, and agreed with the above, the Harvard is still always the first aeroplane that pops into my mind when someone says 'warbird'. And that sound!

I have no words but the smile on my face says it all. Congratulations to Bevan and everyone involved on a magnificent restoration and I simply cannot wait to meet her at Easter!! On a personal note it's rather satisfying to update that entry on The List! I think this must be the first Harvard restored to the air from a ground bound aircraft (ie not just a repair after a groundloop) since NZ1053 was returned back to the air in the mid-1990's? I think you're right - I believe NZ1058 was 1998, before that NZ1057 on 23/12/1997 and NZ1082 on 03/05/1997. Does NZ1015's "birthday" count, or was that more of an inspection and repaint than restoration?

Does NZ1015's "birthday" count, or was that more of an inspection and repaint than restoration? NZ1015 was still in service, so it was just a major inspection, not a restoration.
