The yellow colour used on Harvards/Devons/Vampire Trainers in 1950s was certainly quite different from the matt, wartime colour. I recollect that this post-war colour was quite light, and glossy - there was the remains of such a Harvard on the fire dump at Wigram in mid-1960s, think it was 1014. There was also Devon 1830 on this dump at same time, had the day-glo orange rear fuse, and outer wings, but also had yellow wing bands, must have been caught out by the accident before the change-over was completed. David D David, we just paint stripped my Harvard NZ1044 and under the white paint it had the original yellow bands and roundels, I’ll get Dave Homewood to upload some photos for me but the bands were a very dark mustard looking yellow. And this is from the underside of the wing so limited to no fading.

So we have started to find some interesting things with 1068. She appears to have had both arc5 hf and vhf radio gear in her at some point which we find very strange as most only had one system. I also have a copy of the origional log books that state sje was pulled from long term storage test flown and then sent to ohakea for a vhf radio mod and that may the mod we have found incorporated in the wiring loom. The colour scheme has been finalized all be it we are a we way off that.

Nice work. Out of curiousity what do you do with damaged parts/skin that you're replacing? At the moment all the broke damaged stuff is just in a pile in my shed. We will keep some of the cool stuff like a skin or 2 with numbers or markings on it but the rest im not sure of yet.

In terms of its reworked comms fit, from the logs can you give dates? There was some move in the late 1950s to equip some Harvards with a combination of HF/VHF the forerunner of the later FAC Harvards.

Now a question for anyone that can help. Does anybody have or know of someone that may have some old harvard prop blades laying around that they would want to sell or donate to a good cause.

So we have painted a few things silver because i couldnt wait to see the colour. And the silver we used is a federal standard number so its a very close match to origional. I will post some pics up next time we get a sunny day to drag some bits outside. Also started work on the vertical fin completely paint stripped and found a couple ribs have very very bad corrosion. So that will require a complete rebuild.

In regard to the comms fit and noting the 1950 mod date, it may have been the HF fit as the CMT scheme was cranking up and there was the beginning of Army/Air co-operation for artillery spotting, and at that time the army did not have airband VHF radios

We have a complete arc5 radio set up that now works to go into 68 when she is finished.

Not much to update on at the moment sorry other than we now have a jig for the rear fuse and she will soon be placed into it so we can start the overhaul and corrosion removal.
