It's so nice to see all the awesome photos and clips of the Orions on Facebook, loads of people got out to see them. Feel free you post your photos and videos here if you have them.
It always sort of felt that to RNZAF's Orions would go on forever. It seems strange that they're now entering their last week of service. Such an amazing icon of New Zealand aviation. Truly the end of an amazing era.

They did a low slow East to West past over Whenuapai, then circled round for a high speed low pass down the runway before breaking and landing in order 05 then 01. 02 made an approach right over the keys before climbing to altitude. 05 and 01 then taxied up and through the bird bath, only 01 had a bath though.
Have some relatively good video I'll post when it uploads to youtube.
Was awesome and sad at the same time.
Warning on Video volume: lots of wind, not too wise to crank the volume in your headphones. Also excuse the sometimes not great footage and the frequent closeups of the fence.
First pass East to West over Whenuapai:
High speed flyby:
Zero Five and ZeroOne landing:
ZeroTwo final approach: apologies for the quality of this one, the moment deserved so much more than this video gives it. He was higher than 05 and 01 were on their approaches and I wasn't expecting him not to land and when I realised that was the final moment I stopped recording and just watched. Bit of a sad moment for sure:
ZeroFive and ZeroOne in the bird bath:

Thanks for posting the movies Felyne, I was along the runway in the parking bay. It was very moving to see this today and so much respect shown by the crowd. I took only stills, looking through them now.

I took only stills, looking through them now. Was a good crowd, wasn't it. Good to see a lot of enthusiast kids. We parked at the end of the runway and took a walk down past the parking bay and back - you were lucky to get a spot, we were there at 2:30 and there were only about two spots left. It was moving. Almost the end of an era. When 02 flew away it was a very sad moment.

Was a great turnout. I was lucky enough to get a spot at the fence, and it was a great sight. Very moving.

P-8 just buzzed Whenuapai, looks to be heading out over the gulf.

I was mistaken about the gulf, headed back into Whenuapai. I rushed over to the fence as soon as I realised and got there just in time to see it come in for what I thought was a go-around but it looks like it’s on its way back to Ohakea.
Thought I was getting some great close up footage but in my haste didn’t hit record!! Great looking and sounding aircraft though.

It is off the coast of Hastings having been offshore Waipawa then heading north and has now turned back towards the south possibly continuing back to Ohakea. Its flight started at Ohakea before circling Whenuapai and then overheading Hamilton and Napier.

There are some brilliant photos here from yesterday: Upon accessing that link and reading the text there I discovered something I never knew about the Orion's flight characteristics: THREE GREY ORION AIRCRAFT FLY IN A 'V' FORMATION OVER SUBURBIA, WITH ROLLING HILLS, CLOUDS AND A SLITHER OF BLUE SKY IN THE BACKGROUND. it can "slither" through the sky! 😉 OK I'm going now...

Terrific shots Grant.
W/C Glen Donaldson is a top man. He recently featured in my WONZ Show about No. 5 Squadron.
