The end of an era in NZ aviation! Sad to finally see the early retirement of our Orions. One sentimental touch for me was that NZ4205 was one of the last two - this was the first Orion that I put my signature in the F700 as having carried out the first Instrument After Flight servicing the day it arrived at Whenuapai 14 December 1966. Memories of being the "groundie" on an early Southern Patrol - patrol finishing in Chch, spend the night on the aircraft, cooking meals using the APU, then patrol back north to Whenuapai. Exercises in Townsville and Singapore, working in the MAD shack at the back of the airfield, fault finding the auto-pilot which was making uncommanded descent when flying at 500ft, spending nights in the hangar during Tasmanex and various other exercises, working on the Redifon Procedure Trainer. Memories.

Les, great stories. I have been asked by 5 Squadron Association to look at producing "KIWI ORIONS VOL 2" Covering 2007 - 2023. Some of your memories would make great inclusions should the project get off the ground. Current thinking is that I would write and publish the book in the same format as the original KIWI ORIONS with around 160 pages softback

Current thinking is that I would write and publish the book in the same format as the original KIWI ORIONS with around 160 pages softback Paul, many of my experiences probably fit in Vol 1 - even to the point of me appearing in a photo in the book, but I guess Vol 2 could be around the final updates as well as the personal stories of those who flew and maintained the Orions. A lot of what happened with trade amalgamation came about with the Orion electronics. I spent time being trained on all the ECM gear and then training the Air Radar/Comms guys in how to overhaul the mechanics of their systems eg cleaning the bearings in the AQH-1 Tape recorder rather than replacing them at $100+ a time (big money in 1974).

In our fast fading image of the P3 Orion.
Is there any records of P3's landing at provincial airports (such as Hamilton) or even the Chathams?

I have just completed an article for KIWI FLYER Magazine on a summary of SAR operations by the Orions. Does anyone know the airframe number of the Orion that carried out the last SAR mission in January of this year (16-17 Jan)?

That is very cool! It would be neat to display one with an Orion model.
