Nice article. Good to see Smokey Dawson still involved. He was largely responsible for the progress on the Catalina. Which, not to highjack the tread, looked impressive as well.

Makes a good backdrop, though!

Looking back at this thread, I am surprised there has been nothing added since August. Has anyone made it down there since, I am keen to see any updates.
As we are currently packing to move, I found my photo album with pics of the work, going back a few years now, once we are sorted I will try and post a few.

Brilliant Errol and Dave, thanks for posting. Any word on the floor from Wigrim about the progress on the Vildebeest with a frame to compare it with? I love the look of the green/brown beside the silver. I wonder if there is any chance of getting it on its wheels while it's there?

The team seems to be finding it very handy having the Vincent there, and it is proving to be an excellent reference. The progress is slow because the Vilde has so many fiddly little fittings that hold it all together, but it is progressing all the same. I believe the plan is to reassemble the Vincent back into its wheels and with the wing centre sections, etc, again in a few months time. It will look incredible reassembled under the lights.

In case anybody was wondering, the close ups of the ribs of these aircraft, shown in close up on this page, are indeed of the popular RAF 15 aerofoil section, same as used on Tiger Moths, as well as half of the British-built aircraft of the Great War, and probably also featuring in the wings of quite a number of WW2 aircraft as well.

Nice box arrived at Wigram when I was there this morning..... I believe it's on loan for a year or so. Just looking back through this thread at the photos and many of the comments, this one stood out. This thread began in June 2023, June 2024 is rapidly approaching And in case anyone needs reminding it will soon be time to start the Christmas shopping.

And no doubt the loan will be extended Hey l29, that's an interesting thought, do you know if this has been formally requested?

Talking with Steve Subritzky a few weeks back, he was also wondering what their intentions are, as he's not heard anything from them in ages.

vincent outside by spitfire242008, on Flickr Hope that has your attention. The Vincent is returning to its home base in August(date to be confirmed). I understand that it will be making an appearance with the fuselage reunited with the centre section, making a display fit for royalty.

To be honest, I can't help but wonder if the Vincent is destined for overseas. This my thought when I first saw it wearing its RAF serial. ?

Please forgive me if I’m wrong (and if so I’ll delete this message), but I feel sure I read on this forum some time ago (pre-COVID?) that there was a deal with the RAF Museum and this later fell through.

Yes that is true, and that was way back in 2012. You may recall it was announced at our big forum meet there. But it did fall through when the RAF Museum management changed, thankfully. Steve is very much happy to still have it. When asked why he decided on the camouflage colours, Steve said because Don told him enthusiastically, "Do it in camo!" and they both liked the idea. The serial is what it wore when it arrived here and would have worn for some months before being renumbered, despite being NZ311 on paper from the beginning of RNZAF service. Nothing happened fast with the Vincent world.
