Awesome stuff there Peter. I love the shot of the F-18 taxiing in, and the F.111 taking off at night.
Is that Harvard an ex-RNZAF one? And is its USAAF scheme genuine?

Hi Dave, Thanks. I am not sure about the Havard. There was one doing a flying demo, VH-XNZ. Silver. The F/A 18 taxying in is very aggressive. She's got the leans up. A bit of pro-aileron might have helped! The F-111 image is the one I went down to Avalon to take. I had it in my mind that it should come out like that. It was very hard to track the airborne aircraft at night... just like it is supposed to be. The image is a bit "grainy" from using ISO 1600m but I couldn't have everything I suppose. This is the ex-NZ Harvard. Sorry about the sky.

Some from Avalon, more to come later. Something to put in C-17? I caught up with Craig and George Canciani while there on Sunday. Nice to be able to put a face to the name. Time for bed so I will add more when I get back to NZ. Colin

That C-17 interior resembles the hull of a ship more than an aircraft, simply huge. What are they like for runway lengths? Can the C-17 do STOL stuff like the Hercules, or would it be unsuitable for NZ conditions?

Hi Dave, The C-17 has rough / short field capability, so should be able to operate in NZ, globally and so forth. It can taxi backwards rather well, too! Cheers

Dave, They mentioned the C-17 can land and take off anywhere a Hercules can operate. Now back to packing. Colin PS Peter nice shots by the way and we must have been almost back to back as I have some similar ones.

That's very impressive then, as a Herc can do a very short landing and take off. NZ should have saved up for a few of these rather than wasting money of frigates and APC's.

Harvard VH-XNZ belongs to Doug Hamilton who is a member of the Southern Knights Harvard aerobatic team. Doug is also very active at Temora, flying the Hudson and Spitfires.

Hi Keith, Thanks for that information. I was doing some cross checking on this aircraft. The Australian register advises that the s/n for NZ 1024, VH-XNZ is 88-13188. adf-serials.com says that NZ 1024 s/n is 88 10253, RAF/FAA EX423 and NZ 1039 has s/n 88-13188 EX 743 and sold to M.Nortimer. Maybe VH-XNZ is a composite? Maybe presented as NZ1024? Any light please? Hi Keru, Yes, I guess we probably were near to each other. I scored a visit to the flight deck of the RAAF C-17 on Friday and listened in to a conversation between an Airbus captain and the RAAF officer about the limitations imposed by simulators and fly-by-wire systems. Lots of "shooting down watches" hand simulations. Great stuff. Another person was sitting in the command seat of the C-17 and was also highly amused.

Hi Craig,
A nice lot you have there. Sorry to have missed you. I stayed in the main hall for most of early Friday to keep out of the heat and wind.

Excellent photos Craig. There don't seem to be that many warbirds at Avalon I notice, I take it it's more a arms dealers market type show like Farnborough? Still, some awesome aircraft all the same.
