We spend around $25 billion annually on defense capability. This is set to increase by an additional $100 billion over the next 20 years. Perhaps you can understand why after reading this article. So much for a "benign" environment...

So much for a "benign" environment... With Aus's GDP at around US$1Trillion, that works out to around 10% of your GDP on defence - unless the GDP is expected to increase by a proportionally-equal amount over that time...

Ah no , actually 1 trillion dollars is $1,000,000,000,000.That's 12 zeros on the end. In 08/09 we spent roughly $21 billion US on defense - about 1.9% of GDP. The recent defence white paper has outlined plans to significantly increase this number.

Sorry , I didn't mean to be smart. Total additional spend $100 billion over the next 20 years ie an average of $5 billion extra per year. This will vary as the different projects require. The 100 F35 JSFs will cost around $16 billion alone. The 12 new subs we will build will cost around $36 billion. Nice new toys....

I love the fact that Geoff says that there will be no major new bits of hardware in the white paper because labour already got it all when they were in office............ well you did get it all, ....... all the wrong stuff!! all of the wrong expensive orphan systems.

I guess with the Government books now showing more than $6 billion in deficit, there's not much hope for much new equipment and role expansion for the NZDF in the short term.

Forget the pinz......... what we need are a good couple of Jackals that the British army are now using in Afghanistan. www.army.mod.uk/equipment/fighting-vehicles/1488.aspxWas their not an investigation into the use of armored vehicles in Afghanistan after the death of LT Tim O'donnel?? And is it not true that its not so much the ballistic protection that matters these days with a huge threat now coming from IED's and mines it is mine protection that is wanted?? looking at future insurgence warfare here which is far more likely than conventional warfare were mines and IED's are their preferred weapon??

I thought this review was looking out to 2035! Not much point in having a short term view on defence. It defeats the whole purpose of having the review in the first place. At any rate when is the Minister going to release this document?Or have I missed the crucial anouncement date, perhaps buried in the 40 + pages on the topic. I bet your right though Dave, when it finally is released it will be something along the lines of "sadly due to the poor fiscal policies of the Labour party and the on going recession we can not justify the expenditure of tax payers money"etc etc. Still I hope beyond all hope that someting positive will come out of this long awaited review.

Any reason for this ?Are we that pathetic in this country that we cant make a desision on a realease date for something as important as the future of our country's security.
