The old man is a Mazda fan. had about 4 now. Never had one, he seems to have had no problems with his. Have had a look at some of the Toyota Wish station wagons around. Looking at spending about 5k plus trade in for Van which i think I should get around 7-8 for.

Mumbles - The Capella is only facevalue of $1100 (Insurance market value) (1987 but very reliable and cheap to run, 2nd vehicle) and he is trying to stay good with his company he works for and not claim a vehicle-vehicle accident but a nudge with a fence or something, and was wanting to see us right for $2500 cash or so which is about the cost of repairs if rear lamp assemblies can be found. The rear is out of shape a bit but fixable. We have discussed this with our insurance company and they agree, we stand to get our car back running if we pursue this path. - then we can sell it... We had just been discussing selling both vehicles (1993 Mazda MPV) and get this 626 Station wagon or as others have suggested, a Ford Mondeo SW. Hence my interest in this topic as it talks about a car style I am interested in as a 2 to 1 replacement. Our family has reduced in size from 6 to 3 at home these days. Four kids and very sporty family makes for a high cost of living in a 75yo 10ft stud bungalow in cool Tokoroa... My 2003 Mondeo wagon is awesome, towed Al's Bristol Hercules (briefly!) and of course various trailers loaded with either aircraft or bits of them. The wagons could do with a bit more power though (mine is the 2 litre petrol manual) which is why the new models 2008 and up) went to a 2.3 litre. Pretty roomy compared with some Jap cars and pretty reliable (although mine is getting a few rattles now at 236K! There are ones out there with no problems at over 300K I understand. Fairly economical too.

That makes everything much clearer thanks! We hocked our beloved Capella off to some bloke who worked at the garage it limped to for $400. It was minus a functional engine due to a thermostat failure and overheat though to be fair.

Well we have made a decision and instead of a Mazda6 GLX 2010 at $20k we ended up with a silver Zetec Mondeo 2008 for $15k. (I took your advice Baz and Co!!) Am really happy as the dealer took our 20yo MPV off our hands - it is very tidy outside so looks good and runs well but I avoided the hassle of advertising and selling it and facing argumentative buyers - not my scene - and it was cash in the hand. The Capella is in getting restored/straightened now and bloke confirmed he will pay the invoice using his Co acct on a vehicle maintenance basis. No tow bar so not setup for towing aircraft around the country!!
Trying to find how to post an image from off the laptop into a post ...?? Did the image icon but even there there was no option for alt location choice... only to link to an image on the internet.

Must be the time for buying Mondeos as my son just bought a 1999 MK2 Mondeo liftback. So 2008 means you either got the last of the MK 3 shape(like my 2003) or the first of the new shape? This is a photo of the 2008 MK 4 Mondeo:

Must be the first of the new shape - same trim and lights at the front. Wheels are multi ribbed alloys. Has 6-speed tip-tronic, heated rear mirrors, electric adj driver's seat, fog lights, and dual climate air and 6-disc Sony head-unit. It does go quite well, especially sensitive gear changes on uphills keeping speed up, makes it easy to drive. Very happy camper so far!!

We have the basic 2012 liftback in the same shape- we didn't see the need to stretch to the features of the Ztech model at the time but now wish we had since it had a reversing camera built in (not sure if yours does) Its a great car but the rearward vision is absolutely terrible, so backing - particularly with a trailer - is not pleasant at all. I plan to put a reversing camera in at some stage soon as its a bit dangerous backing out of the drive with kids around.

No we don't have the reversing camera - all data screens are the red non-descript type, but yes that would be a valuable asset. Reversing is mirrors only job basically, down my son's driveway in Glenview Hamilton last night from a back section, really needed the skills with the mirrors, that's how I improved my trailer technique too a while back It had done 156,000kms so was in the price range for us, a lot of highway miles for an AON Insurance agent - Industrial, so travelled a lot. Ours is the liftback too, we didn't really want the S/W although low loading deck seemed good, but the high and very open space from liftback was welcome and the Coupe shape too. YMMV...
