Sunny with the temperature in the mid-teens at my place in Whakaoriori today.
Two years ago today it was a different story.
Here is a montage photo of the Rimutaka Hill Road between Wairarapa and Wellington, with two years ago today on the left and today on the right....And this was Wellington as viewed from the Kelburn terminus of the cable car two years ago today....

Gosh we are nearly in September already! It doesn't much look like there is going to be any cold winter storms in the NI this year then. Having a look at the next week anyway ... www.metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain®ion=swp&noofdays=7It seems that the High's are passing along very low and staying parked to SE of NZ forcing norwest and westerly weather on us as the Lows are forced to disintegrate below NZ so only the westerly weather gets to us. Quite a complex arrangement, but we often get stationery Highs that block the Lows from proceeding, that's also when the east coast of both islands get nor easterly wet weather - seen a fair bit this year too.

I haven't been keeping track, but I am wondering if we are moving into an el nino phase or a la nina phase which is very unclear at the moment. The current Met Service Season Outlook gives a good briefing on what the Met Service are expecting. More importantly it's whitebait season.

Just my 10 cents worth...its absolutely freezing here in Perth!! Walked down to school just now to meet the young fella and the umbrella folded up completely mangled against the wind....At least the winters here are very short, yet VERY sharp brrrr

Huge winds to hit here in Melbourne tomorrow (Friday), somebody at work reckoned they'd heard it'll be gusting up to 90km/h at its worst. Means I'm going to have to tie the bloody garage door secure again after the last big blow on Monday where it nearly escaped.

Just back from my overseas trip - 4 weeks of superb northern hemisphere summer!. No rain at all other than a brief shower one night when I was in London. Long days - sunrise 4am - sunset 10pm. USA was pretty nice weather wise too. One of my Maori colleagues at work reckoned I came back browner than him!

I have just done almost 7 weeks without any rain whatsoever. Record broke yesterday when I arrived in the rainy season, just one shower sofar though. Then again I haven't seen the temps dip below 18 degrees or so either. Don't you just love those NZ winters ... and avoiding them.

Not sure where you guys have been hiding but there were some rather violent and cold storms come through the country this winter.

I agree with you on that Joe. And a few weeks back i heard on the radio that NIWA claimed July was the warmest on record, but I burned more firewood this July than I did the previous year, as it was quite cold here through that month.
This month, particularly the past two weeks, has been warm though. Spring has sprung early here in the Waikato with all the daffodils and cherry trees and magnolias blooming.

I used to love going up Kai-ti hill and look over Gisborne, especially at night! Funny, our trip around the Cape 5 years ago and Hicks Bay looked exactly like that!!

Thanks for all the posts of Gissie. My Mum's side of the family still farm there and we used to spend every Christmas down there. Nicest summers in the country and good memories.

Wairarapa the sunny spot this weekendThe Dominion Post | 12:22PM - Friday, 04 October 2013IF you want sunshine this weekend, head for the Wairarapa.
Clouds that cover Wellington and Kapiti this weekend were not expected to reach over the Rimutaka ranges, leaving Wairarapa bathing in sunlight, MetService forecaster Dan Corbett said.
"Everyone who goes east, it will be like ‘wow, I have landed in another country’."
Parts of Wairarapa this weekend will reach 23 degrees celcius tomorrow then 21°C on Sunday.
It's not all bad in Wellington though.
Despite some cloud, a few patches of sunlight are expected to peek through later tomorrow, when a 17°C high is forecast. Sunday is similar though the high is expected to hit 15°C.
Wairarapa's sunny weather is all good news for those heading over the hill for the 11th annual Rally Wairarapa, which is being held in stages between Eketahuna and Masterton tomorrow.
Course clerk Dave Davies said crowds of about 1000 people were expected at the free event.
There should be a good show of support for Masterton driver Richard Mason who had now won more national championship rallies than any other driver, setting the record at the recent Vantage Aluminium Possum Bourne Memorial Rally.
He was this weekend chasing a record-beating fifth national title, and a win at Rally Wairarapa would likely secure that honour.www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/9244889/Wairarapa-the-sunny-spot-this-weekend

It's blowing like forty bastards in Wellington.
And a shitload of scaffolding on a building site in Willis Street collapsed all over the footpath and the road late-afternoon, fortunately without hitting anybody.
I was at a movie (“Gravity”) at The Embassy when it happened and found out about it when I got the bus back to the hotel and the bus had to divert via the waterfront quays.
I grabbed my camera from the hotel and walked back to Willis Street and took some photographs. They had cleared the scaffolding off the street, but it was still a mess on the building site.Off to Auckland in the morning....on the train, instead of flying. I've got a free train ticket (perks of the job), so it doesn't cost me anything to get there.

The Whanganui River had been in pretty full flood, stopping just short of the Chronicle's carpark. The building was evacuated at 6pm but we're all go today. This is the view outside the office window about 20min ago. The blue car's mine. The little brown protrusions are the boat-tying-up-things which are normally about 1m high.
