Caught up with a couple of kiwis from Nelson on the bus this morning, se we could celebrate together. Otherwise, of course, no-one here in Canada either knows or cares - but anyway, harrah!!!

Back in 1999, my late wife and I were in San Diego, and every bollard on the waterfront was emblazoned "Home of the America's Cup". When speaking to locals, very few of them knew what the cup was about, and we took great pleasure of reminding any who did, that in fact New Zealand was the home of the America;s Cup. We also had polo shirts with an embroidered logo "New Zealand - Home of the America's Cup"

I thought it was the world's longest legal battle, with occasional breaks for a bit of messing about in boats.
One of the reasons I really went off supporting this yachting competition years ago is it's so unsporting - people seem to revel in the fact that the teams publicly abuse each other, call each other names, take each other to court, change the rules to suit themselves, and blatantly cheat using engineering that is banned. Frankly I am not prepared to waste any time supporting that sort of behaviour in any sport. What sort of example does it set? And it seems to get worse every time. But not surprising when it's all run by bankers and big business, ruthless arseholes who care not for sportsmanship but only for glory.
Give me good old fashioned rugby where the teams battle hard and after the match they all have a beer together as mates (unless they are a psycho like the Aussie coach, haha).
Think of the millions, billions wasted on Americas Cup competitions that could be much more wisely invested, in things like warbirds!!

Imagine if it was perfectly legal for track & field athletes to use performance-enhancing drugs.
This would mean that athletes with the deepest pockets would be able to hire the most talented chemists and would therefore have a huge advantage over other athletes.
So it is with the America's Cup where it has become a battle of deep pockets.

That's how Jack Lovelock won his Olympic gold medal in 1936, he was a front runner in the invention of performance enhancing drugs.

As with most things in life, there is more than one way to look at things - considering these other viewpoints brings a balanced perspective

And so it begins again as the government starts pouring taxpayers' money into an elite sport which already has big sponsors with deep pockets such as Emirates and Toyota.

What a bunch of self centred, one eyed twits some of you are. I couldn't agree more. NOW. Reading some of the other "negative comments" on here makes me want to spit. That taxpayers money the GOVT wants to spend is for retaining the crew for now, they will get that back 10 fold and MORE plus it actually helps the bloody economy. The AM Cup brings more money into NZ. NOT!!! just AKL in ways of tourism, jobs etc need I go on!!! So much more than a bloody Rugby game... But I bet if the GOVT was to spend Taxpayers money on this sport everyone would be saying HOOORAY!!! to that. WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
