Awesome pics Colin. Do you have special access to the airport grounds or are all your spots open to the public? I always thought the closest we were allowed to get was the viewing platforms. Viewing platforms are the public areas and easiest to get pics from however I have taken some from public car parks and usually just in and out as they arrive or depart. Too expensive anyway to stay any great length of time as the charges are horrendous!! just got to make sure your not disrupting anyone or getting in the way. It is a pity there is not a more user friendly area to use like they have at some airports overseas. Some even have restaurants overlooking the runways for friends and family to watch their loved ones depart or arrive. We are a travelling nation mostly because we live so far away from relatives or friends overseas so have an interest in whats happening at airports. I always reckon the more people watching the harder it would be for a terrorist to do anything without being noticed. Cheers, Colin

Yeah... you'd think that the airport company would recognise the benefit in providing for those that want to watch the aircraft!! Imagine what a small cafe would make if it were situated by the spotters' carparks!! I've often thought it would be worthwhile putting a wee coffee cart there!

The new Spruce Goose café in the old aero club building at Wellington Airport (on the Lyall Bay side) is extremely popular. And from upstairs, you have an awesome view of the comings & goings at Wellington Airport as well as what is happening out in Lyall Bay.

AIAL would not want any food cart there - attracts the birds. Birds and aircraft do not mix.

This is how its done properly…. Imagine the collective heart-attacks at AvSec if you proposed something like that here!

The second Air New Zealand Boeing 787-9 ZK-NZF arrived from KPAE this morning on its delivery flight. This one is in the standard black and white livery. Cheers, Colin

Nice photos Colin. I think I prefer this scheme to the overall black one.

This is how its done properly…. Imagine the collective heart-attacks at AvSec if you proposed something like that here! Easy solution: Show them how it works at O'Hare in Chicago! They've converted some of the spotters into "airport watch" types. If the "Home of the paranoid & security mad" lot can do it, why can't security types down here do the same? You can read more about it here: edition.cnn.com/2013/06/04/travel/plane-spotters-versus-terrorists/Of course, you need to manage this properly to avoid/control the "I have a vest, I have authority, respect my authority!" types but it has potential!

The last AirNZ 747-400 taxiing for departure...minus most of it's livery. And you may or maynot be able to see this rather low res video of its departure (filmed using my semi-smart phone!) FB video

Even Singapore Airline's cheat lines can't make the A380 look thin.

I was lucky to catch two on one image Emirates EK406 from Melbourne while Singapore Airlines SQ286 taxis for departure to Singapore. The large and the small taxi for take off? First visit by this AN124 UR-82073 which delivered the last RNZAF NH-90 to Ohakea on Thursday. Cheers, Colin

Off the Ugly theme - Friday evening when taxing up to the Gate a FU-24 with a long tail probe took off. Phone still turned off so no photo to confirm. Seem to recall there was one operating over in Budgie Smuggler territory on mining surveys.

That would have been a Pacific Aerospace 750XL ZK-FNZ leaving for Gisborne after arriving earlier from Lord Howe Island? www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/479148/zk-fnz-kiwiair-pacific-aerospace-750xl/Cheers, Colin
